College Intern - Permitting

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Department of Public Works is seeking an intern to assist the Permit Manager in achieving goals for the office of parks permitting. 

The intern will assist the Permit Manager in overall coordination of all Public Works Permits including, but not limited to permitting ball fields/courts, park shelters/pavilions, concession stands, additional equipment (showmobile, bleachers, black boxes), etc. with the public and other City departments. May also assist Permit Manager with tracking, collecting, and recording sports and park facility payments. 

Intern will have the opportunity to learn about parks permitting and policy within the City of Pittsburgh. Intern will also learn about collaboration on parks-related projects throughout the City. Intern will utilize a wide range of software permitting platforms and will receive on-the-job training.

Salary:  $13.25 per hour


 

Hours: 16-24 hours per week. Flexible, with primary work hours 8am-4pm Monday through Friday and potential for joining evening and weekend community events. 

Hybrid-Eligible: while many DPW Permits intern duties may be performed remotely, some may require in-person tasks and meetings.

Location: Physical office - 611 Second Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Phone and online meetings - Microsoft Teams platform. 

 

WORK EXPERIENCE: None required for this position. 

EDUCATION/TRAINING: Must be currently enrolled and taking classes in an accredited college or university undergraduate or graduate program; OR have graduated within the last twelve (12) months.

 

POSITION DUTIES

Communicates with residents and the public regarding park facility and field/court requests. May also provide assistance with resolving permit violations and/or conflicts and provide conflict resolution. 

Reviews and organizes related documentation needed for ball field/court permitting as needed. 

Reviews and completes monthly financial reports and processes payments as necessary (check/money orders; credit/debit cards). 

May assist with setting athletic facility lights in software system. 

May provide assistance with other types of permits, including, but not limited to requests related to equipment, Heavy Equipment, or Special Events. 

May provide feedback and recommendations regarding permitting policy and operations.

May provide primary phone coverage (first to answer incoming or make outgoing calls), answer 311s, etc. 

May provide general administrative support to staff. 

Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
