Pricing & Underwriting Undergraduate Intern

nternship Location:

This role is scheduled to be 100% remote. While remote, finalists MUST reside in one of the following states to be eligible for employment with Kaiser Permanente: CA, OR, WA, HI, CO, GA, MD, VA, CT, DC, or IL.

Department Description:

Underwriting performs risk analysis of employer groups using demographic data and medical claims and evaluation to calculate employee/member rates, collaboration and support of Sales/Account Management partners to explain risk and rating decisions with market facing rationale, group and macro reporting as appropriate, and also internal processing of groups to establish the correct billing rates and medical benefits.  

Intern Projects:

The intern will be learning basic underwriting concepts and internal processing that supports underwriters such as: census demographic calculations, initial renewal set up and reporting, and internal processing of groups in certain group segments. There will also be special projects focused on underwriting efficiency or marketing effectiveness when data needs to be complied for analysis. There will also be many opportunities for the intern to observe underwriting meetings (internal and external) as well as case review meetings in order to gain a thorough understanding of the underwriting function.

Important Intern Logistics:

Interns supporting Underwriting must be available to work a part time (10 hrs. per week) schedule between February 12, 2024 – June 3, 2024. During the Spring, each intern will complete all necessary Underwriting training and shadowing with their teams. From June – August, interns will move to a full-time schedule, performing Underwriting duties and taking part in the Summer Intern Program.

  • Contributing to a designated project or initiative to meet a KP business objective.
  • Report development and analytics.
  • Project management - planning, execution, and measurement.
  • Learning new applications needed to complete assignments or support the execution of business objectives.
  • Job shadowing in other functional areas.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

Experience

Education

  • Pursuing a bachelors degree or have graduated from an accredited university within the last year.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Aptitude to perform data and process analytics and formulating solutions
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3.0 GPA or above.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and experience producing high quality work in short periods of time.
