Intern - System Protection Technician

Job Summary

This position will be located at our East Richmond office in Virginia. 

Interns will work alongside experienced Dominion System Protection personnel to learn the technology used in the protection of the Electric Grid. The Field positions will assist with the installation, maintenance and operation of control systems and protective devices.  Specific functions will include verification of protective relay panel wiring and logic function verification.


Data communication technology is also learned as smart microprocessor relays provide information to Operating Centers. Cyber Security applications will be learned as well as NERC compliance maintenance regulations. These positions will be introduced to the System Protection Development Program for a view of employment requirements of successfully completing the Development Program. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

    •    Must be currently enrolled in a 2 year or 4 year degree in Instrumentation Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Electrical, Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Electromechanical or a similar related degree
    •    Must have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2025 or later
    •    Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
    •    Strongly prefer candidates that desire “hands on” experience vs. “design” experience
    •    Strongly prefer candidates with good problem solving skills while working with mechanical and/or electrical equipment
    •    Experience with Microsoft Office
    •    Math and technical/mechanical aptitude required
    •    Must be able to follow instructions and be a team player
    •    Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
    •    Time management and organization
    •    Abilities: test basic and routine types of protective relays; lift up to 50 lbs.; manual dexterity; color vision; hearing; climbing; stooping; standing; bending
    •    Due to equipment weight limits, individuals in this role have a weight restriction of 290 pounds.

Education Requirements

  • Must be enrolled at a university/community college pursuing an Bachelors or Associate's degree in Electronics, Engineering Technology, Electric Utility Substation & Relay Technology, or other relevant technology/technician degrees
  • Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
  • Must have an anticipated graduation date of spring 2025 or later
