Loss Prevention Internship – Summer 2024

Summit’s internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience as a loss prevention consultant at one of the top regional workers compensation carriers in the US.  Summit Consulting LLC, headquartered in Lakeland FL, is a super-regional workers compensation insurance service provider operating in 14 states throughout the Southeast and Southwest US.  We are “the people who know workers’ comp”. 

This loss prevention intern role will have time-bound rotations within the loss prevention department and exposure to select business operational areas (underwriting, claims, etc.) within the company.  They will accompany a loss prevention consultant during physical surveys of commercial accounts.  This experience allows the intern to observe and evaluate multiple occupational settings such as: construction, manufacturing, hospitality, medical facilities, restaurant, retail, and other industries. The intern will assist with reviewing losses, identifying hazards, evaluating safety concerns, determining recommendations for improvement, and conveying results to the client.

The internship will include a project followed by a presentation of the results. In addition to exposure of all loss prevention and select operational areas, the intern will gain experience with a loss prevention management software to learn aspects of scheduling, report writing, recommendation tracking and document retention.

Essential Functions:

  • Learn about Summit and workers’ compensation insurance. 
  • Experience with field consultants to learn about the role of a loss prevention consultant.
  • Discover how to identify injury trends, safety hazards and provide recommendations. 
  • Gain experience with time management, communication skills for addressing sensitive or corrective information, and professional writing of service reports. 
  • Understand how to provide underwriters with an accurate description of the physical and operational details of an insured.
  • Consult with underwriters and other staff regarding account/line-of-business acceptability, exposures, and controls pertinent to the various lines of business.
  • Employ effective sales and communication skills to achieve compliance with recommendations and provide safety and/or supervisory training to insureds.
  • Maintain confidentiality and specialized knowledge of company/department manuals and procedures as well as relevant Federal, State and other local laws and regulations applicable to EHS and our client’s needs. 
  • Complete a project with corresponding presentation to loss prevention staff. 

Work Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday
  • 7.5 hours daily, start time varies 8:00am – 9:30am depending on appointments during field work.

Location/Travel:

  • The person hired for this internship will work out of the Lakeland, FL office which offers a hybrid work environment. Housing to be provided if the selected candidate is from out of the area.
  • Travel is required within the state, normal travel within a two-hour radius.
  • Reliable transportation required.

Education Experience and Desired Qualities: 

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited four-year college or university, pursuing an Occupational Safety and Health or Risk Management related degree with an anticipated graduation date of Spring/Summer 2024 to Fall/Winter 2024.
  • Efficient using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Detail oriented, reliable, critical thinker, ability to multi-task, goal oriented, and self-motivated.
