Land Surveyor

Join our dynamic team at the City of San Diego Government Agency as a Land Surveying Assistant. This role is at the heart of our mission to ensure compliance with state and local ordinances while maintaining precise property boundaries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide both office and field survey services
  • Review, approve, and process subdivision and other map types, as well as land title documents
  • Establish and verify property boundaries on subdivision maps
  • Record maps with the San Diego County Surveyor’s Office and San Diego County Recorder’s Office
  • Prepare legal descriptions, Records of Surveys, easement and survey plats, and Certificates of Correction and Compliance
  • Support and supervise the City Geographic Systems Cadastral Mapping Program
  • Utilize Computer-Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) software for project processing
  • Direct field crews for additional data collection to finalize CADD projects
  • Serve as Party Chief on a survey crew
  • Train, review, and evaluate the performance of subordinates
  • Read and interpret construction plans, field survey notes, maps, and records-of-survey
  • Prepare survey notes and sketches manually and using CADD programs
  • Establish horizontal and vertical control for field surveys
  • Utilize electronic total stations, data collectors, bar code levels, and Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment
  • Perform complex coordinate geometry land surveying calculations
  • Perform other assigned duties

Notes for Prospective Employees:

  • Scheduled wage increases, including additional pay for registered professionals and those with valid LSIT certification
  • Additional pay for Land Surveying Assistant employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Land Surveyor
  • LSIT certification pay is available for those who meet California’s Department of Consumer Affairs requirements
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must provide documented proof of the work performed and the total number of qualifying OCA hours

Requirements:

  • Education/Experience: Choose one of the following options:
    1. Bachelor's Degree in Land Surveying AND two years of full-time journey-level land surveying experience (as specified in the NOTES)
    2. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including a minimum of 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units of land surveying coursework AND two years of full-time journey-level land surveying experience (as specified in the NOTES)
    3. Registration as a Professional Land Surveyor with a state licensing board
    4. Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) Certificate issued from a state licensing board AND two years of full-time journey-level land surveying experience (as specified in the NOTES)
  • License: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire
