Assistant Engineer-Civil

JOB DESCRIPTION

 Civil positions perform journey-level professional engineering work and may serve as a design engineer with responsibility for all phases of a design project; perform complex construction inspection; check building and subdivision plans; perform planning engineering; storm water quality inspection, serve as project manager for engineering projects of average complexity; may supervise paraprofessional staff; and perform other duties as assigned.
 
      NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by the Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    • 5% effective 1/1/24 
    • 4% effective 7/1/24 
    • 2% effective 1/1/25 
    • 5% effective 7/1/25  
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Assistant Engineer – Civil employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Civil, Structural, or Traffic Engineer are eligible for 31% additional pay.
  • Assistant Engineer – Civil employees who do not have a valid State of California Professional Engineer registration but have a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification that meets the requirements established by California's Department of Consumer Affairs, Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists are eligible for 8% additional pay. The employee's eligibility for EIT certification pay will end when he or she achieves state registration.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply unless otherwise indicated.
                                                 
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  2. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate issued from a state licensing board.
  3. Registration as a Professional Civil, Structural, or Traffic Engineer with a state licensing board.

      NOTE:

  • Additional qualifying professional civil engineering experience may be substituted for education lacking on a year-for-year basis.  One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.

 
EXPERIENCE: Two years of full-time professional civil engineering experience.
 
      NOTE: 

  • A Master's Degree in Civil Engineering may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.

 

LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.  
 
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Computer-aided drafting and Design (CADD) experience.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology experience.
  • Professional Engineering Certifications.
  • Water and wastewater engineering experience.
  • Stormwater and street design engineering experience.
  • Experience with planning or managing construction within public right-of-way.
  • Technical writing experience.
