Clinical Shadowing and Volunteering Program

Summer Program

Location: Larissa, Greece

Cost: $4500

Philotimo Med Abroad aims to diversify the medical workforce by providing young people with hands-on learning experiences. They offer shadowing and volunteer opportunities for pre-med, med, pre-pharmacy, pharmacy, and physician assistant students who want to gain clinical observation hours during their school break. Participants will have the chance to explore Meteora and the city of Hippocrates while rotating through various clinical departments, including those with surgical opportunities, at a shelter and community clinic. All hours are observation-only and follow AAMC and BMA guidance for pre-health experiences abroad. Students will also participate in lab research at the Faculty of Health and Sciences at the University of Thessaly. Greek language skills are not required.

The program involves orientation, observing medical procedures, engaging with patients, and reflective practice. Participants will witness firsthand the intricacies of patient care, from surgeries to consultations. They will also learn the importance of bedside manner, empathy, and effective communication in healthcare settings. Assisting with patient care activities, under supervision, offers practical involvement in the healthcare team and fosters teamwork skills.
