IRS Computer Operations Specialist

Students responding to this posting will be assigned to the Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement (DCSE), Criminal Investigation, Cyber and Forensics Services, Digital Forensics Lab located in Woodbridge, VA.  

 This is a paid position BETWEEN MAY 20, 2024 - AUGUST 23, 2024.

Job Duties:

  • Assist Senior Investigative Analysts in the testing/documentation/validation of a wide variety of forensic tools and hardware.
  • Prepare quality draft technical documents and training to assist investigators with new or existing tools.
  • Perform original research on emerging devices.
  • Assist in managing high computing GPU distributed cluster, GPT stack.
  • Evaluate, test and deploy AI technology.
  • Assist in configuring and documenting network appliances including firewalls, switches, and routers.
  • Perform hardware and software reverse engineering.
  • Assist in the development of forensic and management tools utilizing C#, ASP.NET, GTK+, and Python.
  • Assist in automating and developing statistical reports.
  • Prepare, secure, and deploy standardized operating systems for law enforcement investigative machines.
  • Support design, development, and deployment of investigative technology in both an on-premises or cloud platform.
  • Provide design, development, and development support of Laboratory Information Management System, SharePoint, and other business platforms.
  • Assist in creating test environments and test data for analysis and tool testing.
  • Assist in customizing Linux Distro built upon Slackware.
  • Provide inventory assistance and asset control (including prepping obsolete equipment for survey).
  • Collaborate with digital forensic examiners and support personnel to accomplish investigative missions.
  • Communicate relevant and accurate information, clearly and concisely during formal or informal meetings.
  • Follow procedures and established policies.
  • Use various enterprise tools and technology to prepare and share documents.

Desired Qualifications: 

Successful candidates will be self-motivated and detail-oriented, have strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, and have the ability to work both independently and on cross-functional teams.

  • Proficient in MS Excel and Microsoft Office software
  • Written communication
  • Knowledge of computers, computer components, and exploitation techniques
  • Knowledge of data mining processes for data science projects
  • Knowledge of coding in various programming languages (such as R, Python, and SQL)
  • Knowledge of and skill in applying data visualization tools (graphs, tables, charts, etc.,) and end-user business intelligence products

 

Desired Areas of Study: 

You must be enrolled and/or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student in at least one of the following majors or related fields: Computer Science, Computer Information Technology, Computer Forensics, Digital Forensics at an accredited University/College.

 

Outcomes for Student

The student will be able to explore career options, enhance their knowledge about the inner workings of a large federal agency, and develop their business analysis, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, administrative, and/or communication/networking skills.

Student must meet the following eligibility and basic requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

  • Must be a United States Citizen or National and be at least 19 years old. 
    Be enrolled as a student on at least a half-time basis as defined by your educational institution.
  • Be in good academic standing as defined by your educational institution.
  • Submit proof of student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the student opportunity.
  • Drug Test with a Negative result is required.
  • If selected, the student applicant must successfully complete a federal background check before being given an official offer.
  • Student must maintain student eligibility and enrollment throughout the duration of the program and must be actively enrolled at an accredited institution. Graduated students may not work beyond his/her graduation date without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.
