Geology/Geophysics/Geosciences Intern

AECOM is seeking an enthusiastic Geology/Geophysics/Geosciences Intern to work as part of our team based in Germantown, Maryland as part of the broader Geotechnical and Geophysics Group.

This role includes participation in a broad range of engineering design and construction projects from concept development through to detailed design and construction.  Our projects include some of the largest onshore and offshore, domestic and international civil infrastructure programs including wind and solar energy, pump storage energy facilities, combined sewer outfall tunnels, smart cities, defense facilities, dams, data centers, bridges, and roadways.

This position is expected to begin in May 2024.

 

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing support for geophysical, geodetic, geological, and geotechnical services including geophysical surveys, GIS mapping, soils and materials testing, geologic mapping, vibration and settlement monitoring, soil boring, and rock coring.
  • Working with multi-disciplinary teams on various projects related to a wide range of civil infrastructure projects.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel for project work part-time as needed.
  • Work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.
  • Supporting a wide variety of terrestrial, marine, borehole, and aerial geophysical investigations including seismic refraction/reflection, MASW, GPR, electromagnetics, magnetics, microgravity, electrical resistivity imaging, utility mapping, borehole geophysical logging, downhole/cross-hole seismic, bathymetric surveying, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling, marine magnetics, and marine seismic.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Geology, Geophysics, Geosciences, or a related field with the intent to continue after the internship, unless graduating.
  • Candidates must have completed three years of study in their program.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License is required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.
  • As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, and loading geophysical field equipment, such as seismographs and sledgehammers, of up to 25 pound unassisted and 50 pounds with assistance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree emphasis/interest in Geology, Geophysics, Geosciences, or Geographic Information Systems.
  • Strong desire to learn and a professional drive.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Programs. Capable of functioning with spreadsheets, word processing, and standard office software.
  • A strong sense of commitment and a desire to work in a dynamic deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to travel for project work part-time as needed.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Familiarity/capability in relevant geoscience software programs such as Surfer, ArcGIS, EarthImager, SeisImager, Radan, and AutoCAD.

Additional information

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in-office work in Germantown, Maryland. The selected candidate must be available to work in Germantown, Maryland on a scheduled basis.
  • Offered rate of compensation (Maryland locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The hourly range for this position is $18 – $25/hr.
