Student Nurse Extern, Home Health

The Home Health Student Nurse Extern Program is a temporary 8-week immersive, hands-on clinical learning experience for nursing students interested in pursuing a career in Home Health. Working 3 days per week for 8 weeks during the months of June and July, students will not only provide care and education in patient homes in partnership with CenterWell Home Health Registered Nurses, but also actively participate in development sessions with CenterWell Home Health and Humana nurse leaders.

               

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Student Nurse Extern (SNE) will provide quality, safe patient care in the home. The SNE will perform duties in an ethical manner, ensuring patient safety, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. The SNE interacts with and pursues professional development with all CenterWell Home Health and Humana staff, while maintaining appropriate professional image, practicing in a Shared Governance model of nursing practice. On a daily basis, the SNE will:

  • Care for patients in the home with assigned student nurse preceptor
  • Observe and effectively communicate changes in patient's condition to the Registered Nurse.
  • Perform physical assessments, vital signs, procedures, administer medications, report clinical observations, and assist with activities of daily living in partnership with student nurse preceptor
  • Practice standard precaution and isolation procedures to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, family members, care givers, visitors, and staff.


Use your skills to make an impact 
 

  • Nursing Student within one year of anticipated graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association; must not expire during Nurse Externship.
  • Reports to work on time, wears appropriate attire and identification
  • Ability to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Exhibits good organization, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to interact with interdisciplinary team, patients, staff, and visitors professionally and positively
  • Performs work in an accurate and timely manner
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret relevant information need to identify each patient’s nursing care requirements in conjunction with the RN
