Intern - Venture Programs

Job Summary

 

NJEDA’s Venture Programs Department seeks an outstanding intern candidate to collaborate with a team of highly motivated financial professionals, who are passionate about advancing New Jersey’s innovation economy. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support the Venture Programs Department full product portfolio, including, but not limited to, the development and communication of Key Performance Indicators for the NJEDA’s venture activities, the New Jersey Innovation Evergreen Fund, New Jersey Innovation Fellows (NJIF), NJ Founders & Funders, Venture Fund Investments, Golden Seeds, the SSBCI Life Sciences Fund, the SSBCI SEDI Seed Fund, and the Black and Latino Seed Fund programs.  
 
Innovation can occur anywhere, but it may have the greatest chance of success when born and fostered with the collaboration of interested partners. The NJEDA’s Venture Programs Department manages a suite of programs designed to support a virtuous cycle of innovation in the State by engaging with New Jersey’s large corporate citizens, early-stage businesses, and venture capital and angel investors. The successful candidate will assist in the execution and management of these programs by identifying and evaluating key stakeholders, providing research support, and supporting program processes.  

 

The candidate will gain an in-depth insight into the facilitative role of State government in expanding capital sources through assignments and research involving policy creation, business development, government operations, and venture capital fund investment analysis. This internship is designed to prepare students for a fast-paced business environment. The experience also includes interaction with an assigned mentor, business development meetings with investors, startups, and other ecosystem stakeholders, and networking events. 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Support the development and tracking of Key Performance Indicators for NJEDA Venture Programs Department products.  

 

  • Support the Venture Programs Department across several products including the NJ Innovation Evergreen Fund, NJ Innovation Fellows, Venture Fund Investments, Golden Seeds, SSBCI Life Sciences Fund, SSBCI SEDI Seed Fund, and the Black and Latino Seed Fund programs, among others. 

 

  • Research and help develop a business development pipeline of potential investor, entrepreneurs, corporate tax credit purchasers, and other innovation ecosystem stakeholders to partner with the NJEDA’s suite of Venture Programs Department products. 

 

  • Leverage methods and tools to evaluate applications for NJEDA Venture Programs Department products from investors and entrepreneurs, conducting initial eligibility screening assessments. 

 

 

  • Participate in business development calls, meetings, and events with external stakeholders active in the State’s innovation ecosystem, including venture capital firms, startups, and angel investors, when applicable.  

 

  • Participate in the implementation of program regulations with an acute attention to detail leading to practical long-term operations. 

 

  • Learn and utilize the NJEDA’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database per departmental standards including populating key application data in various CRM records. 

 

  • Liaise across departments within NJEDA and external government stakeholders to maintain forward progress on mechanics associated with accounting, compliance, information technology, legal, marketing, policy, and tax.  

 

  • Report progress in weekly Venture Programs Department meetings. 

 

  • Promote teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative, and customer focused work environment among division, NJEDA staff, and external customers.  

  

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned. 

Qualifications

 

Required Skills and Abilities 

 

  • Advanced analytical and research skills, including the ability to analyze data, prepare data visualization materials and other relevant documentation for the sector leaders. 
  • Interest in policy, legal framework development, investment analysis, venture-manager evaluations and execution. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals and NJEDA staff. 
  • Ability to prioritize workload, be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously, and work independently within limited time constraints with little or no supervision. 
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity. 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and NJEDA staff. 
  • Demonstrate respectful behavior and promote teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, NJEDA staff and external customers. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel, and the ability to learn new software packages. 

 

 

Required Qualifications 

 

  • Preference for a current graduate student who attends a New Jersey domiciled College/University. 
  • Student in or recent graduate from a graduate or undergraduate degree program in accounting, business administration, finance, economics, economic development, and/or related field; Minimum GPA 3.0 with some course work or prior work experience in venture capital or entrepreneurship.
