Job Description

The internship program is a 6-month program designed to give students access to different units within the Department of Aviation (Operations, Security, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, Police, Properties, Maintenance, etc.).  The end goal is to allow students the opportunity to help narrow down which career field they would like to concentrate in after graduation.  Interns will work with various departments at PHL, but they will primarily be assigned to Airport Operations.

Essential Functions

•            Airfield Operations – Spend time in airside operations and become familiar with Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 139 Certification of Airports, and how it applies to PHL.

•            Self-Inspection Program – Shadow airport operations staff and become familiar with how to properly conduct an Airport Safety Self Inspection.

•            Wildlife Hazard Management – Participate in wildlife mitigations and develop an understanding of the risk wildlife hazards create in an airport environment.

•            Vehicle/Pedestrian Operations – Learn best practices when operating in the movement & non-movement areas including the use of the phonetic alphabet and proper radio communications.

•            HAZMAT Inspections – Shadow airport operations staff during fuel farm, fuel island, and fuel truck inspections.

•            Airport Security – Spend time in security and become familiar with Transportation Security Regulation (TSR) 1542 and how it applies to the airport.

•            Airport Operations Center (AOC) – Spend time in terminal/landside Operations, perform terminal inspections, and learn how to issue work orders.

•            Additional projects and responsibilities as assigned by immediate supervisor. 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of aviation and airport operations.
  • Customer service skills and an ability to multitask.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams.

Qualifications

  • College Student (Sophomore/Junior/Senior).
  • Latest transcript required.
  • Applicants aged 18 years and older must complete a medical assessment, including a drug test.
  • Must pass and maintain SIDA (Security Identification Display Area) and if applicable, AOA (Airfield Operations Area) clearance.
  • Applicants aged 18 years and older must complete a medical assessment, including a drug test.

Additional requirements:

The final requirement as part of your participation in the Internship Program is the completion of a final essay.  The essay should outline the different assignments that the intern participated in and summarize their overall experience.  There is no specific requirement in terms of length, but the essay should explain how the interns specific experience has enhanced their knowledge of airport management.  The Operations Manager or Superintendent will approve the paper prior to the completion of the internship. The questions listed below can be used to assist you in writing your paper, but they do not restrict the things that you can write about.

Sample Essay Questions:

•            How has this internship helped with your understanding of Airports and Airport Management?

•            What experiences/work projects did you find to be the most beneficial in identifying your strengths/weaknesses? 

•            Has your participation in the internship developed an area of specific interest in the aviation industry? If so, which area and why?

•            What was the most challenging part of the internship program and how did you learn from that experience?

•            Explain what you believe to be is the most important skill you have developed through the participation in this internship and how it will help you in your career search.

•            What general skills did you rely on most during your internship and how did your participation strengthen them?

•            What is some advice/knowledge that you have gained through this experience that you would like to pass along to future interns working in Airport Operations?

Formatting

The Final Paper must be completed in APA format and in paragraph form.

Due Date

The paper is to be submitted to the Operations Manager or Superintendent two weeks before completion of the internship program.

Salary Range: $18.32 per hour
