Environmental Health & Safety Intern

The hourly rate for an intern is dependent on a variety of factors including major, year in school and geographic location. The average hourly rate for an intern is between $21.00 - $27.00/hour. Locations of internships will vary based on the specified project and function, and will either be on-site, hybrid or fully remote. 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIESTo perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

  • Develop and track recycling efforts.
  • Update SDS chemical inventory and SDS signage and awareness.
  • Evaluate EHS activities to determine adherence to corporate policies and programs, as well as Federal, State and Local regulations.
  • Assist with overseeing compliance with governmental regulations and corporate programs
  • Perform audits, and inspections for regulatory compliance, analyze and implement solutions of all environmental permits and processes (NPDES, SPCC, EPCRA, site-wide disposal efforts, etc. and remediation activities.
  • Execute onsite support services for the entire lifecycle of hazardous materials management programs by performing chemical inventories, segregating chemicals, and shipping hazardous waste off-site.
  • Ensures compliance with site security and emergency preparedness.
  • Perform environmental regulatory inspections for Air, Water, Waste, etc, and analyze the results of the inspections.
  • Assist in sustainability efforts to reduce waste to landfills, electricity, natural gas, water use, etc.
  • Develop and implementation of programs designed for Continuous Improvement with EHS efforts.
  • Assist in accident investigation programs and procedures to ensure work-related injuries are reported and investigated to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Perform Risk Assessments and assist in driving corrective actions and creative solutions.
  • Work with supervisors and managers regarding health and safety matters
  • Interact with vendors and contractors and compliance while onsite.
  • Review ergonomic assessments to determine the safety of employees.
  • Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities
  • Additional duties and responsibilities may be required based on organization needs.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Junior or Senior at the Four Year University or recent graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Safety and Health, Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Basic math/statistical skills
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and time management skills.
  • Knowledgeable in manufacturing and field service environments.
  • Extremely competent with the use of computers including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Office: Standard office equipment; work usually performed in an office setting free from any disagreeable elements.
  • This job is in an office and plant manufacturing environment five days a week. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • While performing some duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to manufacturing equipment, machinery, and moving mechanical parts. Safety glasses and additional PPE are often required.
  • The noise level in the work environment and plant sites can be loud and hearing protection may be required.
  • Lifting up to 35 pounds will be required.
  • Field: Field Service audits will be exposed to extreme cold or hot conditions which may require walking through a construction site (forest, hills, ditches, and rough, rocky terrains).
  • Standard weekly job hours: 40 hours
  • Expected travel: None.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and complete assignments within small deadlines.
