Social Science GIS Analyst

NCCOS' Biogeography Branch conducts socioeconomic studies to map, characterize, assess, and model the spatial distribution of social and economic data, as well as the activities of humans throughout the coastal United States and Island Territories. This position supports the NCCOS social science team which is made up of sociologists, economists, geographers, and coastal specialists. The position requires broad experience and knowledge of the connections between people and the coastal environment.


 

Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review, and publish technical reports and journal articles


 

  • Serve as a specialist in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related software and data platforms


 

  • Support and/or conduct analyses, assessments, and visualizations concerning the social, economic, cultural, recreation, wildlife, or fisheries aspects of natural resource management areas or coastal/marine ecosystems. Coordinate and consult with data providers and specialists to obtain, compile, and analyze information used in formulating specific components of program and project plans.


 

  • Work within a team to generate, maintain, and disseminate GIS datasets and web-based data service and visualization applications. Prepare GIS datasets or services, maps, and specialized applications in support of various projects. Compile, update, and maintain new and existing GIS data.


 

  • Work with team members to ensure data integrity and strengthen data analysis and the design of research initiatives through established and emergent methodologies and analytical techniques.


 

  • Develop and refine research activities and methodological capabilities by creatively applying understanding of social science principles, theories, and concepts.


 

  • Support or undertake skilled project management, including planning, executing, and closing projects.


 

  • Conduct field observations of human activities and uses in park management units


 

  • Use pedestrian, traffic, and/or trail counter equipment to quantify human presence in park management units


 

  • Occasional field work and field operations to install/monitor pedestrian counters, conduct surveys, or research observations


 

Minimum Experience Requirements:

  • Master's (MA or MS) degree in social geography, demography, sociology, economics or a related field plus 3 years work experience


 

  • Relevant experience or academic training in Geographic Information Systems, especially ArcGIS
  • Graduate level training in statistics and demonstrated experience in multivariate statistics


 

  • Experience with statistical software e.g., SPSS, R, or JMP


 

  • Excellent and proven written and oral communication skills


 

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work under pressure with limited supervision, and work comfortably in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects, multiple stakeholders, and frequent deadlines


 

  • Proficiency in word processing, database and spreadsheet applications (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google applications), and use of statistical analysis tools


 

  • Knowledge of and experience with basic hand tool operation and proper safety training as determined for specific field missions


 

  • Ability to work in a team environment
