About the Family & Social Services Administration (FSSA):

The Division of Aging of the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) strives to foster networks that provide information, access and long-term care options that enhance choice, autonomy and quality of life for Hoosiers and is committed to helping Hoosiers find the information and resources they need. Our goal is to put knowledge in Hoosiers’ hands so they can make better decisions, not only for themselves but also for their loved ones.

Services are coordinated and funded through Indiana’s network of Area Agencies on Aging and include the state-funded CHOICE program (Community and Home Options to Institutional Care for the Elderly and Disabled) and administration of two Medicaid waiver programs providing home- and community-based services for older adults and individuals of all ages with physical impairments; additionally, we support the development of alternatives to nursing home care and coordinates services through the statewide INconnect Alliance network.

The Governor's Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) program was created in 1989 to introduce bright and motivated college students to the operations and officials of state government. This program provides interns the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as we as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experience.

 

Salary:  This is a paid internship with the hourly rate of $16.24.


Role Overview:  In this role, Governor's Summer Intern-Department of Aging, you will assist the Division with a variety of projects ranging from policy and procedure development to program monitoring systems.  This position is ideal for someone interested in social services, social determinates of health outcomes, program monitoring and outcome measures, and quality assurance.  You will create of an aging specific disaster preparedness plan by a review of Area Agencies on Aging plans; assembling statewide guidance and procedures; reviewing with Homeland Security office that include required elements for Long Term Care Ombudsman program. You will create monitoring tools for Older Americans Act compliance requirements including impact on identified target populations, effectively targeting at risk populations as defined by the Older Americans Act. and what recommendations could be made; specific work around non-English speaking populations to include research of what populations we have in Indiana, identification of concentrations, develop resource materials, identify cultural barriers to members of that population accessing services, identify rates of Medicaid enrollment and/or nursing facility placement. You will also produce a research study of transportation issues affecting the elderly and physically disabled in Indiana by; identification of local programs, identify gaps, coordination with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), etc. to see if more alternatives can be develop.

Intern Candidates must be current students in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Prior to the start of their internship, candidates must have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.  Project management experience is desired and a familiarity with healthcare helpful.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
