ODOT District 5 is currently accepting applications for a summer internship (May-August) in our Construction/Engineering Design/Environmental Department. If you are currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related Environmental degree program, Construction Engineering or Construction Management Program, we strongly encourage you to apply.
To be eligible, you must be in good academic standing while pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or related Environmental degree program, Construction Engineering or Construction Management, also provide proof of Enrollment Documentation showing a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Position Description:
This temporary position involves various duties that can either supplement the student's major field of study and/or provide experience that is useful in addition to the student's education.
CONSTRUCTION JOB DUTIES:
These duties include training in proper procedures for inspections of work being done by contractors, including: Widening & resurfacing projects; Hazard elimination (safety upgrading); Signing; Guardrail; Intersections; Drainage facilities; Assisting in surveying; Form & reinforcing steel; Concrete placement on structures; Flexible & rigid pavement; Assist in bituminous plants; Perform tests on concrete & soil.
The student will perform support functions in record keeping, maintain accurate data of work performed, organize materials & compiles information to assist in report preparation. Our engineers are in the field overseeing projects being constructed from the ground up. Whether it is a simple roadway resurfacing or the construction of a new bridge, our civil engineers are in the middle of it all!
May work in various counties (Coshocton, Fairfield, Guernsey, Knox, Licking, Muskingum, & Perry) based on the location of the construction project assigned.
ENGINEERING DESIGN JOB DUTIES:
Receives training on procedures & performs specific technical tasks as assigned (e.g., operates a PC & CADD (Microstation) system & can perform duties on them independently as well as call up, work with & insert files; copy, update & revise existing drawings on the CADD database; create new drawings into the CADD database using sketches &/or ports of preexisting drawings, some of which may be on CADD already), performs calculations. Assists with engineering studies & preliminary engineering.
Use CADD applications within the District Office assisting in the development of highway reconstruction plans: a) plan & profile sheets of existing & proposed roadway improvements; b) highway & bridge related detail drawings; c) tables, summaries & general notes; d) mapping existing & proposed routes; e) finalization of plan sheets in reproducible form (plotting).
Performs miscellaneous duties to facilitate operational efficiency of work unit (e.g., research of plans and records, scan and reproduce plans).
ENVIRONMENTAL JOB DUTIES:
In the Environmental Section of the Planning & Engineering Department, assists the Environmental staff with projects .& documentation by utilizing the computer & related software (e.g., internet, web pages for ODOT, Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); ELLIS, Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook) to research information (e.g., National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Environmental Justice Maps, Categorical Exclusions, upcoming projects, submerged land leases, lake lines, city limits ), to pull maps, generate reports, create lists (e.g., public involvement requirements, mussel stream) & data bases (e.g., permits, flood plain).
Performs miscellaneous duties to facilitate the operational efficiency of the work unit (e.g., operate state vehicle to assist with field reviews, take photos, & identify sites of endangered species &/or wetlands; attend meetings & training; assist with necessary recordkeeping; organize materials & compile information to assist in report preparation).

Upon graduation, interns are eligible to apply to be an ODOT employee through the Transportation Civil Engineering (TCE) Program. This program gives a new engineer the on the job experience, continued education through training and seminars offered at ODOT and the ability to work with Professional Engineers leading towards the requirements necessary in obtaining their P.E. certification. Qualifications
To be eligible, you must be in good academic standing while pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering or Construction Management, Environmental Engineering or related Environmental degree program, also provide proof of Enrollment Documentation showing a minimum GPA of 2.00.
If operating a state-owned vehicle, must show proof of valid driver's license OR must provide own transportation.

The pay rate for a college intern is based upon the students' academic status:
Freshman and Sophomore Students: $16.43 per hour
Junior and Senior Students: $15.96 per hour
Graduate Students: $20.59 per hour

The final candidate selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position.
