Occupational Safety Intern

To continue our standard of excellence, Piedmont is seeking a motivated, reliable student to join us as a Safety Intern. This internship will assist in achieving the corporate mission of providing a safe environment for employees and customers.  Interns will have the opportunity to learn about and be exposed to each function of an airline safety department.  After successfully completing the internship, the intern will have an overall knowledge needed to understand all elements of safety. The Middletown intern position is responsible for assisting the Regulatory Compliance team with ensuring safety and compliance throughout the organization. This position reports to the Senior Manager of Safety.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Investigate current hot button topics for inclusion into company policies and processes
  • Assist auditors with conducting audits of the company
  • Contribute to the Corporate Emergency Response Plan (CERP) by helping with review of event summaries and preparation for drills
  • Research into known or suspected safety concerns
  • Assist in creating presentations, reviewing manuals, and conducting safety audits
  • Assist Safety team with supporting the software used for audits
  • Daily data analysis, data entry, and project development
  • Additional duties may involve interaction with other departments outside of Safety as well as some travel

 

Job Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Minimum of one year of progress towards a degree with a major or minor in safety or aviation/aeronautical science
  • Excellent communication and Microsoft Office Suite skills required
  • Organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, handles multiple tasks, problem solving skills, and the ability to set and meet deadlines
  • General knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs), Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulations, and procedures regarding airline safety

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior student
  • Prior work experience, especially in a fast-paced office environment
  • Knowledge of Tableau

 

Work Environment:

  • Standard office environment, use of computers and other office equipment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule if needed
  • Some travel required

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
