BCSTAT Student Intern

The Baltimore County Executive Office, Government Reform and Strategic Initiatives (GRSI) Agency in the division of BCSTAT is looking for a student intern for 2024 Summer. 

BCSTAT is Baltimore County’s Data-Driven Performance Management program, whose mission is to create accountability, improve performance, ensure data quality and increase transparency across Baltimore County.

The team consists of the Chief Data and Performance Officer and four performance analysts. 
The BCSTAT team works in partnership with individual departments, using data analysis to assess, monitor and improve County functions and services. BCSTAT is part of the County Executive’s goal to create a data-driven culture of accountability within County government. 

Job Purpose 
The internship will act as a pipeline for talent to transition into our Data Fellow program or even into full-time employment with the County. In an effort to improve recruitment and retention within Baltimore County government.           

Examples of Duties

Definition of Responsibility 
Under general supervision of the Chief of Data and Performance Officer, the intern will be responsible for working on data projects along with various data analysts on the BCSTAT team.  Projects may vary based on the data needs of the County.

Essential Duties

  • Experience first-hand how local government operates, while also receiving a comprehensive and global understanding of the various entities.
  • Better understand how to use data to positively impact the lives of the residents of Baltimore County. Examples: Analyze 911 data in order to identify addresses that have a disproportionate number of calls.
  • Help understand what interventions should occur to decrease the load on the Baltimore County system, but also allows for efforts around services to those most in need.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements

  • Undergraduate students in their junior or senior year, and graduate students actively attending an accredited college or university are eligible.
  • Students must have at least a 2.8 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the undergraduate level or at least a 3.0 GPA at the graduate level.
  • A college transcript is required as evidence of GPA. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
  • Must be pursuing a degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems/Technology, GIS, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.

Preferred Courses (or equivalent)
Experience with data visualization and GIS
Experience with computer programming
Ability to write effectively

Conditions of Employment
