Hospitality internship: The Dining Hall Steward

– Camp Cobbossee for Boys –

Monmouth, Maine

THE ROLE

Camp Cobbossee for Boys seeks a Hospitality intern to work as our Dining Hall Steward throughout our 2 month summer starting June 9th through August 10th, 2024.

 

The Cobbossee Dining Hall provides 3 meals a day, for our 230 campers and 160 staff. This position is excellent professional development for aspiring front of house managers. The Cobbossee Dining Hall is at the heart of the action everyday. Cobbossee is the second-oldest summer camp in the nation, and has built a reputation on excellent coaching and sports programming, as well as the traditions and activities that make camp such an unusual and transformative experience. 

 

Our food and Dining Hall are jewels in the crown of the Cobbossee experience. The Dining Hall Steward blends together the kitchen team with the management and running of the Dining Hall experience and has an important Community facing role, specifically in relation to managing Seconds, Clean up, Birthday cakes and other go-between duties with the Operations team. 
 

The kids will love you and the counselors will want to please you as the face of the dining hall experience. This role carries responsibility, keeping the camp machine rolling at meals but also provides an opportunity to interact with every table of counselors and campers and the entire Cobbossee community. The Dining Hall Steward will work closely with the Director, Josh, and the Assistant Directors throughout the summer.
 

COMPENSATION

This position blends perfectly with an existing appointment at college, as our dates run June 9th to August 10th. A travel allowance is provided as part of the position to subsidize the cost of return travel to and from camp for you.
 

The base Salary is paid Maine’s hourly minimum wage of $14.15 (overtime is $21.23). We work 6 day weeks at camp, the 6th day is paid at overtime rate. Your summer earnings will top $6k, with earnings of $4k pre-tax after weekly site deductibles of $175 which includes; bed & board, laundry, wifi, facilities use and camp transport. We have excellent athletic facilities! For those with children, especially sons, we can offer them camp scholarships as well. 
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Hospitality Major or Minor
  • You love working with young people. This is crucial. You will work with campers aged 7-15, and staff aged 19-26. 
  • Demonstrated team work experience as part of a close-knit team
  • Ability to organize and lead (in tandem with the Head and Assistant Head Chef) a staff of 12-13 college-aged Kitchen Assistants hired from all over the states and world.
  • Ability to function well in an inclusive, mutually-supportive non-discriminatory community. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior summer camp experience
  • Experience interacting with our camper age groups of 7-15 
  • Experience supervising a staff of college-aged employees.
     

THE DETAILS

  • Seasonal position in Monmouth, ME June, paid hourly at $14.15. 
  • Weekly onsite fee includes all Room, board and facilities (Our food is amazing, especially for a summer camp)
  • Supervise all aspects of the Dining Hall processes
  • Champion the Cobbossee values of Brotherhood, Sportsmanship, and Community.
  • Communicate closely with the Directors of camp. This means big picture organizing as well as leadership and participation in special events, daily scheduling meetings, and most importantly flexibility and creativity within the camp environment.
  • Outside of meal times, having the freedom to engage and be involved with any and all of the Cobbossee day to day programming
  • Spend the summer active and explore Maine on your days off with great co-workers
     

THE BOTTOM LINE

Though certainly a Dining Hall position, this appointment is something more. You would be an integral member of a vibrant social community with ethics (Brotherhood, Community, Sportsmanship) at its core. Your coaching and leadership skills will build Meal culture, but also develop young people and your assistants.
