Vegetation Management Specialist

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general direction, execute plans for scheduled vegetation activities for distribution, transmission, and other Company facilities on a system-wide basis.
  • Monitor progress and document compliance of contract crews to ensure work is done within budget parameters and that crews follow all state, municipal, and federal laws pertaining to worker safety, herbicide applications, and traffic control.
  • Requires effective communication and negotiation skills for dealing with customers and contractors, as well as knowledge of safety and environmental laws relating to vegetation control.
  • Inspect rights-of-way (ROW) to assess vegetation conditions and determine required maintenance activities; mark work in the field where required.
  • Research easement and land rights for widths, rights and restrictions.
  • Meet with landowners and respond to public concerns related to vegetation management work.
  • Inspect work completed by contractors for compliance with clearance specifications.
  • Provide support and assistance on special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate's degree (or higher) in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resources, or closely related field.  No experience required.
    • Candidates completing their degree by June 30, 2024 will be considered. 
      OR
  • A high school diploma or equivalent PLUS three years or more of directly related experience in forestry.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • This position will report regularly in person.  The reporting location for this position can be either Duluth, MN; Little Falls, MN; or Pine River, MN which will be determined at the time of hire between the Company and the selected candidate.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate prior to hire.
  • Must obtain International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist certification within 6 months of test eligibility.
  • Must obtain Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator license within 1 year from date of hire.
  • Overnight travel is required.
  • Familiarity with ATV/OHV, snowmobile, ARGO.
  • Aerial patrol in a helicopter is mandatory for this position (60+ hours annually).
  • Ability to respond to storm events and assist in storm restoration operations.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS products.
  • Ability to identify local tree species and knowledge of growth rates.
  • Must be able to work alone and hike in rugged terrain and inclement weather.
  • Able to read and follow both paper and GIS based maps.
  • Working knowledge of Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) techniques and equipment used for vegetation management.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.
