Education and Vocation Coordinator

JOB TITLE: Education and Vocation Coordinator

LOCATION: Youth Reengagement Center – 9215 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI 48210 (Southwest)

REPORTS TO: Director of Education and Vocations/Superintendent  

FLSA STATUS: Exempt/Salaried

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time Regular

JOB SUMMARY: Coordinate and oversee the planning and implementation of education and vocational services for SER YouthBuild Learning Academy.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Coordinate and oversee the implementation of healthcare and construction curriculum.
  2. Lead and coordinate GED, Foundational Skills, and Vocational activities.
  3. Serves as the liaison between SER Metro- Detroit and YouthBuild partners.
  4. Monitor and engage in healthcare externships and construction worksites visit to support instruction as needed.
  5. Coordinate the onboarding of eligible participants through a selection process, Challenge Week.
  6. Ensure that Program objectives and outcomes are met.
  7. Manage a team of 5-7 staff members, providing guidance, support and supervision to ensure effective execution of program activities.
  8. Document and review the effectiveness of the program and its services for reporting purposes.
  9. Collect, analyze, and use high quality and timely data from programs, and reliable internal and external sources to enable data- informed decision making.
  10. Maintain communication with partners, personnel, student’s champion, and participants.
  11. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including Local Unions, high schools and community and social service agencies to enhance program offerings and promote participant success.
  12. Must be self-directed, organized, and possess the ability to work within a complex blended program model and team setting.
  13. Stay current in pedagogy and andragogy approaches that meet the learning styles of the population being served.
  14. Addressed behavioral issues as they arise.
  15. Attend community meetings, departmental and cross-functional case conferences.
  16. Participate and facilitate youth related activities.
  17. Ensure the program complies with USDOL and MDE administrative policies and procedures.
  18. Remain current in academic or program discipline, including maintaining licensure, certification, or continuing education requirements where appropriate.
  19. Contributes to the team effort by performing other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, education administration, or a related field is required. (Teacher certification and experience in vocational or Career Technical Education are necessary.)
  2. Ability to work in an enthusiastic and encouraging way with young people facing barriers.
  3. Experience in creative curriculum planning and development is preferred.
  4. Commitment to the goals and objectives of the program and to the mission of SER Metro-Detroit and SER YouthBuild Learning Academy.
  5. Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income students, understanding cross-cultural values regarding education, and the ability to establish rapport with the target population.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
  7. A high degree of initiative and the ability to work without constant supervision are required. Must have experience working in team settings, collaborate effectively with others, function well under pressure, manage multiple tasks concurrently, and always remain professional.
  8. Must be able to plan program activities and services, manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet tight program deadlines.
  9. Regular punctual attendance, including evenings and weekends, is required.
  10. Must possess a valid chauffeur driver’s license.
  11. Must be eligible to pass a background check, including fingerprints.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit for extended periods of time, and have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Must be able to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  - This job operates in a normal school environment with a noise level, which is at times, moderately loud with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
