Public Works Technician I

Information about the current vacancies:
The City of Saint Paul Department of Public Works has three vacant Public Works Technician positions. These vacancies are in the Survey and Bridge Divisions.

Survey Division:
There are currently two vacant positions in the Survey division. These positions are located in 1000 City Hall Annex, work Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and are required to work in all types of environmental conditions.  One of the positions will be responsible for office based work and one will be responsible for assisting field crews with instrument operations. Typical duties include:
 

  • Assists the coordinator with CAD functions and data management, including field crews computations.
  • Drafts topographic surveys and documents research
  • Drafts base maps
  • Reviews submitted surveys

 

Bridge Division:
There is currently one vacant position in the Bridge division. This position is located in 900 City Hall Annex and works Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Typical job duties will include:

 

  • Prepares basic engineering drawings, maps, and plans using CAD.
  • Creates and edits GIS point and line features to maintain data and create maps.
  • Supports inspection programs and bridge maintenance tasks, for example updating bridge clearance drawings and maintaining snow plow route maps.
  • Conducts site visits to collect photographs, measurements, and observations of Bridge Division infrastructure: bridges, walls, stairways, guardrails.
  • Performs basic construction and field observation, including producing daily work reports and photographs.
  • Supports records management, document research, scanning, and other office-related assignments.

The eligible list created from this assessment will also be used to fill Public Works Technician I positions as they become available in various divisions within Public Works.

Additional information about this position:
 

Performs engineering technician work involving land survey, traffic studies, routine construction inspection, project design, and drafting. Responds to complaints from the public. Issues permits. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

 Position Requirements:

Ten semester credits in courses acceptable toward an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering as offered by the U of M or equivalent; and two years of experience as an Engineering Aide II or equivalent.

Each additional year of qualifying experience may be substituted for 3 1/3 education credits.

***Please note general education coursework in science, math, liberal education, or language studies is acceptable.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating
 
The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline.
 
GENERAL INFORMATION: 

Open Job Posting: This posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.

Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
