Job Description

ENSCO, Inc.’s Mission Systems Group is seeking a Meteorology Intern who is interested in applying their meteorological skills to real world problems. The candidate will work with a team of scientists and engineers to develop new atmospheric modeling methods and apply meteorological expertise to a variety of projects. ENSCO projects support our nation’s government and require a broad range of meteorological skills, including numerical weather prediction, transport and dispersion modeling, Python coding and plotting, statistical data analysis, and weather analysis and forecasting.

Qualifications Required (Skills)

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM field and currently enrolled in a Meteorology or Atmospheric Science graduate program, working towards a Master's Degree or PhD with the following attributes:

  • Experience with Unix/Linux
  • Experience with numerical prediction models (i.e., WRF or MPAS)
  • Proficiency in Python
  • The ability to work independently (with supervisory direction) as well as with an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • THE ABILITY TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN A SECRET SECURITY CLEARANCE FOR WHICH YOU MUST BE A U.S. CITIZEN

 

Qualifications Desired

 

  • Experience with NCAR’s Model Evaluation Tools (MET)
  • Ability to code in additional languages, such as Fortran, C++, Rust, and/or R
  • Statistical programming experience with Python or R
  • Experience with atmospheric transport and dispersion models, such as HYSPLIT, SCIPUFF, or FLEXPART
  • Knowledge of various meteorological datasets (e.g., GFS, HRRR, NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis, ERA5, etc.) and formats (e.g., GRIB2, NetCDF, PrepBUFR, etc.)
  • Knowledge of AI/ML methods for meteorological modeling, post-processing of ensembles, satellite data interpretation, gridded data interpolation (e.g., neural networks), etc.
  • Experience with atmospheric chemistry models, such as WRF-Chem, CAM-Chem, CMAQ, etc.
  • An active security clearance of SECRET or greater
