ADA Assessment Intern

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking two motivated and detail-oriented student interns to work in teams of two to conduct assessments of DNR facilities and assets. Candidates will get to spend much of the summer outdoors, conducting accessibility assessments in our parks and other outdoor recreation spaces.
 
Candidates should be able to use tools to take accurate measurements, have strong communication skills, and have the desire to contribute to the future of the state's natural resources by improving the accessibility and usability.
 
This internship program begins with a week-long orientation/training to provide the tool and technology specific knowledge needed to be successful in this position. Interns will be provided with training, tools, and equipment to conduct assessments, and collect and electronically record data.
 
Interns will be expect to:
1. Conduct on-site accessibility assessments by recording measurements (width, height, slope, cross slope, clearances, etc.) and identifying easily removable barriers in the provided GIS-linked data collection system. Assessments will be completed with the provided toolkits and training. The toolkit includes tools such as a tape measure, smart level, stop watch, pressure gauge, and multi-tools.
 
2. Collect and Report data using a provided mobile device to provide photographic documentation of asset features and conditions and record data in Survey123.
 
3. Maintain a log of daily work in the provided tracking system, and review weekly progress with the ADA Coordinator.
 
4. Complete written reports to summarize findings for each location assessed which will include the identification of barriers to accessibility and recommend remediation action to comply with statutory accessibility requirements, and research and evaluate options for improving the accessibility assessment process utilizing all available sources of information and resources.  
 
5. Develop and deliver a presentation of project results to the ADA Coordinator and Team and select Department management prior to the completion of the internship.
 
Essential Functions
 

  • Conducts accessibility assessment according to established protocols.
  • Communicates activities effectively both in writing and orally, including formal and information communication and presentations to department leadership, facility management, and ADA Coordinator.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use provided tools, including proper techniques for use, calibration, and care of tools.
  • Prepares technical and non-technical documents/reports that clearly communicate assessment findings, remedial measures, and priorities.
  • Works with minimal supervision and follows all work rules, policies and procedures of the Department.
  • Uses portable computer technologies, tools, and survey123 and google cloud software.
  • Lifts and carries equipment and supplies that weigh up to 25 pounds and performs physical labor, outdoors, in any type of weather, and in rugged terrain and in or along water bodies up to 2 miles per day.
  • Safely operates motor vehicles

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants for positions in this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution, as determined by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise.
