Stewardship Internship

The Stewardship Intern participates in preserve operations, and assists with the development, management, and maintenance of nature preserves and conservation easements. Specific projects will include: 

  • Assist or lead data collection activities across PA TNC properties.
  • Assist in organizing and executing volunteer workdays. 
  • Assist in planning, creating, and maintaining TNC public trail systems and assisting in public recreation projects. 
  • Prepare and maintain Stewardship equipment, tools, and facilities for workdays. 
  • Assist in habitat management and restoration activities, including the use of herbicides to manage invasive species.

A significant portion of the Stewardship Intern’s time will be spent implementing ecological forestry practices. The Stewardship Intern will assist the Conservation Forester in restoring mature forest characteristics through targeted cutting and treatment of invasive species.  Both Stewardship Interns will gain experience in connecting conservation principles to on the ground decision making and learn about enhancing forest resiliency. Training will be provided for all tasks.

The interns will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. 

 

What you'll bring:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university academic program in Conservation, Sustainability, Resource Management, Environmental Science, or related field. 
  • Reside within commuting distance of the designated regions for the duration of the internship. 
  • Can work independently (with guidance) 35 hours per week. 
  • Can communicate accurately, transparently, and to apply feedback. 
  • Familiarity with spending long workdays outside. 
  • Experience with data collection, data management and interest or familiarity with GIS. 
  • Basic skill and/or learning how to use hand tools, power tools, herbicides, and gas-powered equipment.  
  • Knowledge of ecology, habitat restoration, public recreation, inclusivity, creativity, and innovation.  
  • Awareness of plant identification or previous experience.
  • Can walk long distances carrying 20+ lbs of tools and equipment and support for a culture of safety.
