Sr. Ecological Restoration Engineer

Overview

RES is currently accepting applications for a Senior Ecological Restoration Engineer for our Western Region. Work associated with this position will support restoration efforts throughout the region including work in California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado and will be based out of our San Francisco or Sacramento offices.

The Mission: direct, develop, manage, and lead the group of junior and mid-level engineers and design staff and supervise the design and construction of projects.

We are looking for a leader capable of directing and working with teams from diverse disciplines, including designers, junior engineers, ecologists, and hydrologists, as well as business and planning staff. Your advanced communication skills will enable you to explain and interpret the accurate construction documents you produce to audiences with varying technical understanding, and as an expert in the stream/wetland restoration field, you will bring innovative solutions to challenging restoration projects.

What your day-to-day might look like?

At RES, you will be dedicated to restoration and will be involved with building your designs.

You will be engaged with restoration design tasks for complex ecological systems spanning the creation and enhancement of stream, wetland, tidal, and special status species habitats. You will lead the development of restoration design documents, so proficiency from the concept level through production of construction design plans and specifications is a must. You will also ensure that restoration designs are compliant with regulatory and permit requirements and will contribute technical input for compliance reports and oversee as-built verifications. Expect to find yourself in the field evaluating sites for restoration potential, collecting data for design, and providing oversite for implementing designs you’ve developed, and therefore data collection and prior experience as a field crew leader will support your application. You will have a strong background in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulics, sediment transport, and civil engineering.

At RES you will be involved in all aspects of a successful mitigation restoration project including client acquisition, land acquisition process, feasibility site visits, mitigation design plans, developing technical specifications, and directing construction personnel in the field. This also means that occasional travel around the West is expected to visit clients or project sites.

You will help shape our future, working with the regional Directors and General Manager to grow the design team and capabilities for the Western Region. This will include management of junior staff, hiring, and mentoring of an interdisciplinary design and restoration team. Strong communication and leadership skills, along with demonstrated teamwork, will be essential.

Qualifications

We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:

• B.S. in an engineering or natural science fields such as but not limited to environmental engineering, water resources engineering, civil engineering, ecology, landscape architecture, geomorphology, geology, geography, or natural resources engineering
• PE license in the States of California, Oregon, Washington, or Colorado
• 10+ years of applicable stream & wetland restoration design experience
• Demonstrated experience managing junior staff and design teams
• Knowledge of, and operational proficiency with, AutoCAD/AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation; TR-55, HEC-RAS/HMS, XPSWMM and GIS.
• Fundamental understanding of watershed hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, stream hydraulics, sediment transport, and wetland assessment and delineation
• Demonstrated experience completing feasibility and concept development for stream and wetland restoration plan sets.

What will make you stand out?

• Experience leading floodplain analyses, hydraulic and hydrology (H/H) investigation, groundwater hydrology, as well as stream and wetland biological functionality
• Experience with seasonal wetland and vernal pool restoration
• Construction oversite experience
• Understanding of Clean Water Act, state, and federal environmental regulations and permitting processes
• Understanding of Green Infrastructure Stormwater Practices including bioretention, bioswales and constructed wetlands
• Understanding of the FEMA floodplain development permitting process

Pay Range: $130,000 - $160,000
