MTCC AmeriCorps College Coach - Soft Landing

The Soft Landing Missoula (SLM) youth program aims to create opportunities for success, emotional and physical wellbeing, and social engagement for refugee and immigrant youth in Missoula, Montana. By developing and offering a range of services for youth, SLM aims to create an environment and community space where these clients have access to academic, social, and recreational opportunities that support positive social determinants of health. SLM offers after school academic mentoring, college access support, and summer programming as well as social and recreational opportunities for elementary, middle, high school, and college refugee students.

Soft Landing's Youth Program priorities are to: provide academic support to middle and high school students during the school year; provide summer programming and events to engage youth with priority given to 4-8th grade, new arrivals age k-young adult, elementary students, high school students, young adults; provide social and recreational opportunities throughout the school year with priority given to middle school students, high school students, elementary students, young adults; and provide academic support and guidance to those wishing to pursue and actively enrolled in higher education.

Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.

The AmeriCorps member will engage at least 16 first-generation and/or low-income college students in either two coaching sessions per month, seven coaching sessions per academic term, or fourteen coaching sessions per academic year. As an AmeriCorps member, you will collaborate with another AmeriCorps member serving with the International Rescue Committee to provide academic mentorship support for refugee and immigrant youth. You will assist in planning and implementing academic, social, and recreational programs and activities in order to provide increased accessibility to low-income refugee youth. You will oversee college support programming and support the volunteer coordinator in oversight of academic mentorship pair-ups for college students. You will also oversee weekly college support groups, coordinating volunteers, communicating with students, and providing support for volunteers and students.
