MTCC AmeriCorps College Coach - Dawson College

In partnership with Dawson Community College, Dawson Promise is a program aimed at helping youth aging out of the foster care system, unaccompanied youth, or homeless youth obtain a two-year education without debt. Through Dawson Promise, students are provided opportunities that may have previously seemed out of reach.

 

The AmeriCorps member will serve as a College Coach at Dawson Community College (DCC) and will primarily serve the students in the Dawson Promise Program. This role focuses on supporting and empowering low-income, disadvantaged students on their path through college. Dawson Promise is aimed at helping unaccompanied youth who are experiencing homelessness or aging out of the foster care system, or who are otherwise unaccompanied, to obtain a two-year post-secondary education free of debt. Montana Campus Compact (MTCC) serves as the intermediary for this project. MTCC is a CEO-led coalition of colleges and universities that support civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across the state. Every year we place cohorts of full-time, part-time, and summer AmeriCorps members with schools, colleges, nonprofits, and government agencies in Montana. The AmeriCorps projects we facilitate increase educational equity, break down barriers between higher education and community organizations, and address the root causes of poverty in communities across the state.


The College Coach will work directly with Dawson Promise students, providing them with personal motivational mentoring and academic support through progress reports, faculty follow up, and tutoring. You will aid the Dawson Promise Advisor with organizing Life Skills training sessions for Dawson Promise students; including resume writing, personal finances and budgeting, and scholarship or job applications.You will also work closely with the campus OneHealth Liaison to encourage students to receive free counseling and other medical services available to support mental health. You will also assist the Student Success Department in a variety of opportunities to help create, coordinate, and implement activities to improve academic support and career readiness to achieve student success, retention, and timely graduation.
