Summer Tutor/Counselor

The West Virginia State University Upward Bound program seeks college students to fill Tutor/Counselor summer positions.   Position includes two weeks of training, four weeks living on campus (off on some weekends) and two weeks on on educational trips.

Salary and Incentives:

Required Qualifications

  • Completed at least 30 credit hours of college work
  • Pass criminal background check
  • Successfully complete mandatory training

Responsibilities of Tutor/Counselors (TCs): 

Student Support: Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to a group of high school students participating in the Upward Bound Program. Assist students in adjusting to the college environment, developing study skills, and setting academic and personal goals.

Program Facilitation: Assist in planning, organizing, and facilitating academic and enrichment activities designed to enhance students' educational experiences, and personal development

Community Building: Foster a positive and inclusive environment. by organizing community-building activities, discussions, and activities that encourage cross-cultural understanding, teamwork, and social interaction among program participants.

Crisis Management: Serve as a responsible and dependable point of contact for students in case of emergencies or concerns. Follow established protocols for addressing medical, or other crises, and communicate effectively with program director and appropriate university personnel.

Policy Enforcement: Enforce program and university policies ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants. Address any violations or behavioral issues in a fair and consistent manner, while promoting a respectful and inclusive atmosphere.

Role Model: Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and strong interpersonal skills to serve as a positive role model for students. Exhibit a commitment to educational attainment, personal growth, and responsible decision-making.

Collaboration: Collaborate with other TCs, program staff, and university departments to coordinate programming efforts, share best practices, and contribute to the overall success of the Upward Bound Program.

Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of student interactions, incidents, and program activities. Provide regular updates and reports to program coordinators as required.

Out-of-State Trip: Final Week of the Summer Academy

As part of the enriching experience offered by the Upward Bound Program at West Virginia State University, an out-of-state trip is organized during the last week of the program. This trip is designed to broaden participants' horizons, expose them to college campuses in an adjacent states, and provide hands-on learning opportunities that align with the program's educational objectives.  During the sixth week of the Summer program, TCs take on the crucial role of chaperoning a program trip. As chaperones, TCs are responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and engagement of program participants during all activities. They maintain adherence to schedules, provide guidance during interactions and discussions, and respond effectively to any emergent situations. TCs serve as approachable mentors, facilitating meaningful connections between experiences and personal growth, and fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere throughout the trip.
