About us: 
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:
This position will serve within Fort Laramie National Historic Site's (FOLA) Cultural Resources division. The resources division protects and preserves the natural and cultural heritage of FOLA, while providing access, education, and entertainment to the public. The museum, archives and library are owned by the public and for the public! We collect all things related to park history: archival, archeological, ethnographic, historic, biologic, and geological collections.

The primary responsibility of this position relates to the care, maintenance, preservation, use, and promotion of the park's library and archival collections and supporting records. The current library collection at FOLA exceeds 6,000 publications. The intern will work directly with the Cultural Resources Manager and associated National Park Service Staff (NPS).  This position will reorganize, house, and catalog various library materials into the NPS Library Information System (LIBRIS) as well as support staff, researcher, and public access to and use of park library collections. Work will also be conducted in the park archives and may include large format scanning, arrangement of backlog material, and entering catalog data into Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) database in accordance with NPS museum collection and archives policies and procedures. The intern will draw on the library and archival collections to develop and publish educational social media content that promotes public awareness of these collections and the park's national significance. Learning and completing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tasks may be required. This includes basic library, museum, and exhibit environmental monitoring tasks such as checking pest traps and recording temperature and humidity.

Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in library information sciences (LIS/MLIS), archives, English, or history is preferred.  Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply. 

Service Location:
Fort Laramie National Historic Site was a vital post along the trails of the westward movement migration in the 1800s. The site consists of various historic structures and is located on 833 acres. The park is situated in southeastern Wyoming, 3 miles west of the town of Fort Laramie and 23 miles west of Torrington (a county seat, population 6,500). The small surrounding communities have post office facilities, stores, schools, and churches. In addition to these, Torrington has medical facilities and a junior college. The park is also 50 miles west of Scottsbluff, NE; 100 miles north of Cheyenne, WY; and approximately 3 hours from Denver, CO. No government housing is available. The intern will need to find his/her own housing arrangement.

This position is not AmeriCorps eligible due to high living allowances that exceed the maximum AmeriCorps compensation.

Member Qualifications: 

  • Driver's license
  • Personal vehicle is REQUIRED.
  • Willingness to work independently and with a team.
  • Enrollment in or graduation from an undergraduate or graduate program in library information sciences (LIS/MLIS), archives, English, or history is preferred.

Additional: 
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:  

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States.
  • Being at least 18 years or older.
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
