Position Dates: 05/06/2024 - 08/24/2024 (16 weeks)

The primary role of this position will be to provide leadership and oversight for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program and its members. The Kodiak Refuge YCC program targets hiring at least two to five high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 to support Refuge programs and projects between June-Aug. For up to nine weeks in the summer, the YCC program provides a variety of service-learning opportunities that educate and engage youth on the Kodiak Refuge. The program introduces participants to the mission and purpose of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local environmental and conservation efforts in partnership with other agencies and organizations. There may be 1-3 remote week-long trips on Kodiak Refuge for projects that will include physical labor such as clearing trails, painting, marine debris clean ups, or other tasks. While on the Kodiak, AK road system the YCC team participates in a variety of activities and collaborative efforts.

Some examples of core duties include:

· Communicating by phone, text and email to the YCC members.

· Working alongside the YCC members to provide guidance, support, and ensure safety.

· Scheduling training and learning field trip opportunities for the YCC members.

· Prepping materials for YCC-led efforts, organizing field equipment, and overseeing all remote trip logistics.

· When the part-time YCC members are not at work, the YCC Director will assist with other education efforts, as well as support Salmon Camp and Visitor Center operations.

Prior to the YCC season, Kodiak Refuge Visitor Services Program employees and volunteers, including the YCC Director, will participate in a minimum of two weeks of training and two weeks for YCC season prep prior to the season start.

Compensation amounts:

  • $1,300 - one time RT travel allowance
  • $350 - weekly living allowance
  • $1,000 - duty-related reimbursements (used for work duty-related expenses - discuss with supervisor)
  • Housing provided
  • AmeriCorps Award of $1,824.07 (must complete 450 hours)
  • Earn Certificate of Eligibility for Noncompetitive Hiring for federal positions based on completing 640 hours of Public Land Corps service
