Position Summary: 


The Student Conservation Association (SCA) provides hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.


Position Description:


Come work for the National Park Service in Alaska and help keep our park lands pristine! Invasive plants cause millions of dollars in damage across the United States, but here in Alaska their impacts are still minimal. Assist biologists and natural resources managers with invasive plant management; conduct regular invasive plant surveys; perform invasive plant control by pulling, digging, and cutting; conduct data entry and analysis; use a Trimble GPS unit for mapping, data collection and processing; GIS data management, and map production; help with outreach activities in the local communities; complete reports or other documents related to natural resource management projects.

Interns may serve a portion of their time alongside Fish and Wildlife personnel in King Salmon.

You'll have the opportunity to participate in the training of all Alaska NPS seasonal employees conducting invasive plant management, focusing on GPS data collection and processing, control techniques, and plant identification. You will be encouraged to focus extra time on any aspect of the work you find particularly interesting. Finally, you will have opportunities to work and play in one of the nation's most amazing National Parks!

Applicants should be comfortable around herbicides and with travel on watercraft.

Position Dates: 05/06/2024 - 09/22/2024

 

Member Benefits:

  • $1,500 - one-time RT travel allowance
  • $350 - weekly living allowance
  • $1,500 - duty-related travel for Anchorage training
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($2,474.27)
  • Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
  • Housing provided.
    • Intern will be housed in a dorm near the headquarters in King Salmon. Dorm has two floors of rooms with kitchen/living/bathroom facilities on each floor.  While at Brooks Camp, the intern will be in shared housing.  Backcountry work will involve camping or use of cabins.

It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
