Cultural Resource Preservation Intern 

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Anchorage, Alaska is seeking a Cultural Resource Preservation Intern to assist in preserving our amazing cultural resources. This 26-week internship will focus on cultural resource preservation and compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act. The intern will have the opportunity to work on projects related to the Iditarod National Historic Trail (INHT) and the Carter Spit Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

 

The BLM, Anchorage Field Office manages 23 million acres of public lands in western Alaska, including the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta and Norton Sound. The office oversees diverse landscapes such as forests, tundra, muskeg bogs, the Unalakleet National Wild and Scenic River, and the Iditarod National Historic Trail. It also includes the Campbell Tract Special Recreation Management Area, a 730-acre recreation area adjacent to Anchorage.

 

Program Dates:

Start Date - April 1, 2024

End Date - September 29, 2024

 

Responsibilities:

- Survey and document cultural sites associated with the INHT and the Carter Spit Area

- Prepare determinations of eligibility and/or nomination forms for the National Register of Historic Places

- Assist in fieldwork in remote areas of Alaska, dependent on funding (may require small plane and helicopter travel)

- Prepare survey and monitoring reports from field trips

 

Training:

The intern will receive training in the following areas:

- First Aid

- Wild Animal safety

- Firearms safety and certification

- Helicopter and General Aviation safety

- Defensive Driving

 

Qualifications:

- US Citizenship and a valid US driver's license are required

- Candidates should be close to graduating with a BA in Anthropology or be current graduate students with a field school experience and knowledge of documenting historical and archaeological sites

- Basic archaeological and GIS skills are necessary

- Research and writing skills are required

- Experience working in remote areas, particularly Alaska, is preferred

- Experience with ArcGIS/ArcPad and handling bear spray and/or firearms is desirable

 

Compensation:

- $1,500 one-time round-trip travel allowance

- $600 weekly living allowance

- $8,000 duty-related reimbursements (receipts required) for duty travel and housing ($1,500 for duty travel and $250/week for housing)

- AmeriCorps eligibility with a $3,447.50 education award upon successful completion of the internship and 900 hours or more of service

- All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes
