Project Type: In-person

 

Duration: 32 weeks (8 months) starting June 2024

 

Location: International Institute of Tropical Forestry, Sabana Field Research Station, Luquillo, PR

 

Housing: Must be secured by the intern/fellow. A housing stipend of up to $1,000 per month will be provided.

      

Project Background: The Sabana Field Research Station was originally established by the USDA Forest Service in 1938 with the objective of maintaining security and surveillance of all surrounding forest areas. Remodeled in 2012, the station has all the amenities to accommodate individuals and groups interested in completing scientific work in the surrounding areas located within the LEF, including the nearby Sabana River and Bisley Experimental Watersheds.

 

Project Duties: Key responsibilities include serving as the administrative technical point of contact for the Sabana Field Research Station. Accomplishes and provides advice on a wide variety of technical and administration duties including the facilities and management of quarters. Collects, processes and filtrates water samples.

 

  • Serves as the primary administrative business process point of contact for the Sabana Field Research Station.
  • Responsible for the administrative oversight of various business processes.
  • Manage electronic and physical records, which includes Personal and Real property; Quarters; and budget.
  • Property inventory.
  • Serve as a Government Technical Monitor for service contracts.
  • Prepares documents to order goods, supplies and/or services for various unit operations.
  • Responsible for monitoring, reporting and following-up on facilities, safety and other issues related to the Sabana Field Research Station.
  • Manages quarters which include managing iQMIS.
  • Assist with the collection and packaging of water samples and related processes that may include data entry.
  • Responsible for the administrative oversight of various business processes, which may include processing financial, procurement, property, personnel, and other administrative needs.
  • Disseminates administrative information to employees and serves as a liaison for administrative support that is provided by other units.
  • Assists in developing and implementing solutions for administrative problems within the unit and the larger administrative program. Identifies and recommends ways of combining, simplifying, or improving program support processes.  Provides plans that assist in meeting program priorities.

 

Resource Assistants (RAs) will work and communicate with a Hispanic Access Program Associate during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3-5 blog posts highlighting their experience and development. (5%)

 

 

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of, and skill in applying, rules, guidelines, regulations, and procedures concerning program and office operations to collect a variety of factual information; identify issues or problems; select solutions from alternatives in guidelines and precedent cases; and prepare clear, concise reports.
  • Working knowledge of the various phases of support services functions of budget and work planning, resource services, human resources, procurement, and supply in order to understand the interrelationships of various support services activities to be able to offer workable suggestions or recommendations.
  • Knowledge of various databases is required as well as the ability to perform a substantial range of functions within each software type to produce a wide range of documents often requiring complex and varying formats. Ability to update and revise existing databases is required.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, printers, scanners, peripherals, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Adobe, others).
  • Skill in oral and written communication in order to prepare or compose correspondence, convey statements of fact, or make inquiries, and to provide assistance. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Must be 17 years of age or older.
  • Must have a driver’s license.
  • Completion of master’s degree in Biological Sciences from an accredited university. 
  • Spanish and English language requirements.

 

 

Stipend + Benefits:

  • A biweekly stipend of $1,300 based on a 40-hour workweek.
  • Monthly housing stipend up to $1,000 per month
  • Monthly commuting stipend up to $50

  • Travel expenses paid to participate in orientation July 15, 2024 – July 19, 2024
  • Funds available to support professional development opportunities that align with role and goals (training, conference, etc.)
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for certain federal positions.

 

Working Conditions: 

This position will be based at the USFSInternational Institute of Tropical Forestry, Sabana Field Research Station, Luquillo, PR. Work environment will vary between outdoor assignments in the field and indoor assignments in the office. Offices are adequately lighted and ventilated. Duties in the outdoors can occur in sunny, warm or hot, and humid conditions. Candidates are encouraged to research local conditions and amenities.
