Biological Science Technician – Wildlife/Plants
Job Overview
This is an entry-level position on the Superior National Forest that will assist with the management of
wildlife and plants. The position will gain broad exposure to the different types of work the Forest
Service does and will have opportunities for training to promote career development. The internship
requires a person with a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and an interest and desire to work in
the field. The position will work in the Wildlife and Botany Programs on the East Zone of the Superior
National Forest, and most of the work will be in the field at various locations, with some office work.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Assist with monitoring and inventory of habitat and species (e.g. surveys - N. goshawk, owls,
Canada lynx; monitor – wildlife openings, moose habitat)
• Assist with habitat improvement and restoration projects: reconnaissance, layout, inspect
ongoing habitat projects.
• Assist with management of invasive plants (e.g. herbicide spraying, hand-pulling or cutting)
• Use GIS software to make maps, manage data, and perform simple analyses.
• Assist with pollinator habitat improvement projects and native seed collection for pollinator
projects.
• Assist with routine equipment maintenance.
• Operate 4WD pick up and/or ATV while carrying out work (5-10% travel time)
• Perform physical labor such as carrying a backpack sprayer, hiking, crouching, stooping,
walking on uneven ground.
• Some work performed in office (e.g. data entry), other work performed at various field locations
on the National Forest
• Frequently work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, conservation biology, wildlife management, or natural resources
• Interest in field work.
• Ability to work alone or with partners.
• Driver’s license required.
Minimum Requirements
● Completion of 4 years at an accredited university or higher
● US citizenship or permanent residency. RAs must undergo a government background check if
selected.
● Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for July 2024
