Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the National Park Service – Valles Caldera National Preserve are seeking an intern who will act as a Hydrologic Technician for the Summer/Fall 2024 field season.  This includes collecting data on stream chemistry and discharge and working on wetland restoration projects throughout the preserve.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

·        Collection of discharge data, making discharge measurements, and maintenance and upkeep of flumes and stream gages currently operated by the National Park Service.

·        Collection of chemistry data, calibration of equipment, and QA/QC of water quality data.

·        Assisting with calibration and upkeep of other data collection systems, such as weather stations.

·        Collect, combine, organize, and publish a GIS database of wetland restoration sites and activities throughout the Preserve.

·        Assist with wetland delineations, wetland health assessments, and other restoration activities.

 

 

Minimum Requirements:

·        Valid US Drivers License with an insurable driving record of at least 3 years

·        Some exposure at the collegiate or professional level to GIS and/or database systems.

·        A strong interest in public service, land management, and watershed management and science.

·        Ability to both work long days in the field, hiking and carrying equipment across uneven, trail-less terrain, for 3 or more miles, and work long days in an office environment.

·        Applicants must pass a criminal background checks for both DOI and AmeriCorps eligibility

·        Must be 18 years or older

·        Must be a US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

 

Preferred Qualifications

·        Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology, Earth Science, GIS, or related field.

·        Some exposure to R, Python, or other programming languages.

·        Some exposure to the ESRI ArcPro ecosystem.
