GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) INTERN

The GIS Intern in the Information Technology department will work with a diverse group of professionals to participate in a variety of functions ranging from maintenance on the City GIS web applications, data collection/creation, and field work. This internship also provides an opportunity to assist the GIS team in facilitating the successful application of GIS services including 3-D modeling, data analytics, drone piloting, and programming the full range of the ESRI GIS software suite. You may also assist in the preparation of map updates and creation of new maps for special projects. 

 

How much money can I make? The rate of pay for this internship will range from $15-$20 per hour depending on your course completion, previous work history, and other qualifications. 

 

What are the qualifications for this position? This internship requires a solid understanding and interest in cartographic principles, data management, digital map production, the ability to use independent judgement to accomplish assigned duties, ability to listen and communicate effectively, and strong computer skills with Microsoft Office experience, ESRI ArcGIS Software, and ArcGIS Pro software. 

 

What type of degree program would be best suited for this internship? Students currently enrolled in a GIS, Geography, Engineering Technology, Information Systems, or Drafting degree programs (both Associates and Bachelors) would see the most value out of this internship. 

 

What type of schedule will I work and how long will the internship be? This is a 12 weeklong internship starting May 2024. The position will average approximately 35 hours a week. There may be potential for a full-time employment opportunity at the end of the program, if the City has vacancies at that time.
