Hydrologist Resource Assistant

Coronado National Forest – Supervisor’s Office

Length: Term of positions is 52 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Location: 300 W Congress St, Tucson, AZ 85701

Compensation:

$18.75/Hour pre-tax), plus $1000 monthly housing allowance (pre-tax) ($250 per week)

Start Date: September 30th, 2024

Position Title Hydrologist Resource Assistant

 

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

 

Stewards in partnership with the Coronado National Forest is seeking a Resource Assistant (RA) who will serve in the Minerals and Geology Program. The RAwill learn to review the surface and groundwater portions of mine plans and water specialist reports. Their work will benefit surface and groundwater resources through identification of necessary mitigation measures or changes to a mine plan to benefit water resources.

 

The RA will be mentored by senior scientists in this field and be immersed into a developmental path to be able to convert into a permanent position with the USFS.

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Introduction to the NEPA hydrology documentation.
  • Introduction to groundwater and modeling techniques.
  • Develops an understanding of surface and subsurface water characteristics in analysis.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in hydrology or geology.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Must be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of season (Associate’s or Higher)

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Any type of hydrologic software experience (MOdflow, hecras, etc.)

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
