CDC Research Participation Opportunity

CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of the Director, Immunization Services Division (ISD) within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

ISD's mission is to protect individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases through provision of federal funds and contracts to purchase vaccine, the provision of technical and financial support of immunization programs, provider and public education, and evaluation and research. ISD administers the Vaccines for Children program, Section 317 immunization grants to state and urban area health departments; provides technical support and funding for immunization information systems, provides training and education to health professionals; conducts research to improve the uptake and delivery of vaccines; and evaluates program effectiveness through the National Immunization Survey.

Research Project: This fellowship will offer the opportunity to lead and implement cross-cutting projects that will guide critical research toward protecting individuals and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases. The selected participant for this fellowship will participate in training activities that will enhance their skills in public health law research and analysis, and develop an understanding of vaccine law and policy.  

Learning Objectives: The participant will be placed on collaborative activities and high-level analytical policy projects aimed to increase vaccine access, advance health equity, and reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. Activities may include:

• Planning and conducting public health policy analysis,
• Developing briefing documents or reports, and
• Assisting with policy and guidance development.

At the conclusion of the training experience, the participant will:

• Gain experience and training in public health law research and analysis
• Identify public health law priorities and policy needs
• Apply knowledge and skills to analyze and solve public health issues

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a bachelor's or master's degree in one of the relevant fields within the past five years. 

Preferred skills:

• The ideal fellow possesses strong organizational skills with high attention to detail, high analytical abilities, and strong ability to research collaboratively in a team environment but can also take initiatives to solve problems.
• Experience or knowledge related to policy research and analysis
