CDC Public Health Analyst - Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch, Office of Laboratory Strategies and Analytics Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. Research Project:  The Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch (CEMB) is the laboratory branch in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP). The mission of DHQP is to protect patients; protect healthcare personnel; and promote safety, quality, and value in both national and international healthcare delivery systems. The Office of Laboratory Strategies and Analytics (OLSA) in CEMB is seeking applications for a Master's level ORISE Fellow. Under the guidance of a mentor, the fellow will join the team as an public health analyst and train on how to analyze and evaluate processes and policies supporting a variety of antibiotic resistance activities focused on healthcare associated infections, including domestic and global networks like the Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory Network (AR Lab Network) and the Global Action in Healthcare Network (GAIHN). 

Learning Objectives: The fellow will collaborate and assist a multidisciplinary team and branch and staff, as well as external stakeholders in achieving strategic priorities including but not limited to analyzing and improving processes, producing reports, and assessing quality, efficiency, and/or sustainability of partnership services. The fellow will train on how to prepare reports, conduct research and analyze data, and provide consultation, training, and expertise for internal and external staff to support CEMB’s strategic priorities in the areas of antimicrobial resistance detection and prevention. The fellow will learn how to draft recommendations for improvement based on the analyzed results and findings. They will perform analyses and evaluations of policies, legislation, and programs to provide staff information and data to guide informed decision-making, strategy setting, and work plans. They will learn how to develop strategies and assist with partnerships to collaboratively achieve CEMB's goals through convening, leading, facilitating, and attending meetings, conferences, and other professional forums.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate must have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or currently be pursuing the degree with completion before the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within the past five years. 

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with project management and/or program evaluation
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, including public speaking and preparation of written materials such as documents and reports
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team
• Experience and/or degree in a public health field, health policy and management.

• Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 months or currently pursuing.
• Academic Level(s): Graduate Students or Post-Master's.
