The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Environmental Technician position. This position is located in our Headquarters Office in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.


In this position, you will support field studies in Washington rivers and streams that monitor freshwater quality, streamflow, and related analyses. You will gain experience in field data collection and analyses for discrete and continuous stream monitoring activities. Your work will support pollution control plans and mathematical models for water quality and surface water hydrology. This is an exciting opportunity to learn and use the safety, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) tools and standard operating procedures developed by the Freshwater Monitoring Unit (FMU) and Modeling/TMDL Unit (MTU) in Ecology’s Western Operations Section. You will work with staff from both the Freshwater Monitoring Unit (FMU) and Modeling/TMDL Unit (MTU) with opportunities to learn from several experts in water quality and quantity monitoring.

Program Mission: The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure, assess and communicate environmental conditions in Washington State. 

Tele-work options for this position: This position will have flexibility of a hybrid schedule, empowering work from home and office, providing less time in traffic and shrinking your carbon footprint. This position is eligible for telework for the in-office portion of work. Staff will need to report to the office regularly to prepare for and participate in field work. Field work occurs throughout the year on regularly scheduled intervals and as needed to complete field tasks. Teleworking staff will need to periodically work in the office to accomplish certain tasks. Applicants with questions about position location options, tele-work, and flexible or compressed schedules are encouraged to reach out to the contact person listed below in “other information.” Schedules are dependent upon position needs and are subject to change.

Duties

 

 

 

What makes this role unique?

In this role, you will learn about and support various complex freshwater monitoring studies. You will face new challenges and opportunities on a regular basis and be part of a very dynamic team that enjoys doing their part to protect the rivers and streams of Washington and has fun doing it. You will have the opportunity to work outside, travel throughout Western Washington, and build a foundation of sound scientific skills.

What you will do:

 

  • Assist with field operations including collecting and recording environmental data and samples, maintaining field equipment, and calibrating instruments.
  • Support the installation, operation, and maintenance of continuous monitoring systems in rivers and streams.
  • Collect stream discharge and stage height measurements.
  • Operate water quality & quantity sensors and probes, collect water samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Download data loggers and enter the resulting information into databases.
  • Compile and organize data using spreadsheets and databases, perform basic GIS analyses.
  • Perform preliminary data review for quality and completeness.

Note: The Department of Ecology will provide Personal Protective Equipment and reimburse for travel and lodging costs.

 

Qualifications

Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

 

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Required Qualifications:

 

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent AND Two (2) years of technical or clerical (level 3) experience such as performing the duties as an Office Assistant 3 in an environmental agency or office.
 
NOTE: College-level course work in environmental, physical or natural sciences, or closely related field may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.

Additional experience and education combinations that meet the requirements for this position:

Possible Combinations: College credit hours or degree – as listed above: Years of required experience – as listed above.

Combination 1; Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; 2 years of experience.

Combination 2; I have 30-59 semester or 45-89 quarter credits; 1 year of experience.

Combination 3; I have 60-89 semester or 90-134 quarter credits or an AA degree; No experience.

 

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience in Environmental Science, Fisheries Biology, Chemistry, Forestry or a related field.
  • Experience with data analysis and data management.
  • Good communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to swim.
