CDC Fellowship in the Division of Infectious Disease Readiness and Innovation

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

The Rapid Response Research and Surveillance Branch (R3SB) supports state, local, tribal, and territorial health departments (STLT) to build and sustain infectious disease surveillance and response capacity by collaborating with public health partners to translate science into action and equitably meet the diverse needs of all communities.  The Wastewater Epidemiology, Investigations, Special Projects, Evaluation and Modeling Team applies innovative approaches to lead wastewater epidemiology, modeling and evaluation, and rapid response readiness to inform policymakers, engage the public, and support STLT jurisdictions to prepare for and respond to public health threats.

Research Project: The purpose of this training fellowship program is to provide an educational experience to individuals interested in the fields of public health epidemiology, and infectious diseases. Opportunities are aimed at furthering the fellow's knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology and analytical knowledge and learning to communicate findings to other researchers and the public. Fellows are assigned to train on various projects and can expect to gain valuable experiences in the development, implementation, and evaluation of research activities such as study management, database cleaning, data analyses, interpretation of the results, writing manuscripts and developing poster and oral presentations.

Learning Objectives:

Participation in research projects
Design, implement, and improve existing and future information systems related to wastewater surveillance.
Data analysis, modelling, and development of visualizations.
Analysis of large-scale data and summarization of findings using statistical software (SAS, Python, R, and/or similar programs).
Collaborate with team to improve standardization, utility, and public health potential of data systems related to wastewater surveillance.
Collaboration and participation in meetings.
Verbal and written presentations of studies at scientific conferences.
Preparation of literature searches, scientific manuscripts, posters, presentations, and other information.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: June 12, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a masters or a doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields (e.g., Life, Health, and Medical Sciences discipline; Mathematics and Statistics discipline). Degree must have been received within the past five years or to be completed by May 31, 2024.
