Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of field survey experience as an instrument person. Applicants within six months of meeting the education/experience requirement may be considered for trainee status.

A Valid Florida Driver License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy #6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment.   If, in the past 24-month period, the applicants Motor Vehicle Record has more than three (3) moving traffic infractions or three (3) or more at fault motor vehicle accidents (or combination of both and /or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence) or is in violation of any standard mandated by Federal or State Law or Regulation, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position.

Successful completion of all applicable background checks pre-hire and ongoing are required.

 

Position Summary:
This is technical surveying work involving the application of intermediate level surveying skills and techniques, including the operation of all survey instruments necessary to perform assignments. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed and well established procedures.

An employee assigned to this classification performs intermediate level surveying tasks which require some degree of skill or previous experience to do an effective job.

Work is performed under close supervision or general supervision in accordance with specific instructions and defined procedures and schedules. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions and conformance with established standards.

Examples of Duties:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

This is an emergency essential classification.  Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.

Operates theodolite, total station, compass, electronic distance meter, pipe locator, level, G.P.S., data collector, etc.

Determines and accurately records horizontal and vertical angles and measurements.

Performs basic survey calculations; determines points of elevation and location of boundaries; locates and records control monuments; reads, interprets and prepares sketches of property descriptions.

Records accurate field notes and prepares sketches necessary to document daily field activities for use in preparation of architectural, engineering, surveying, property acquisition, and design projects.

Sets grades and performs layout for road construction and drainage projects.

Reviews field notes prepared by field crew to insure completeness and accuracy of work.

Maintains survey instruments and associated equipment.

Assists survey crew as needed.

Clears line of sight using machete, chain-saw and other tools to clear brush and trees.

Drives a County and/or a personal vehicle to perform required duties.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

Physical ability to walk long distances over rough terrain while carrying survey instruments/equipment.

Ability to download and upload projects from data collector.

Ability to understand minimum technical standards for surveying.

Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and general public.

Ability to understand and operate GPS instruments.

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and works in close proximity to heavy equipment and high speed traffic. The employee may be required to walk through wet and rough terrain.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, with exposure to loud noise while the chain saw is in operation.
