Overview:  

Community Education Group is looking for an Accounting Intern to join our Accounting team. As an Accounting Intern, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in non-profit accounting processes and procedures. You will assist in various accounting tasks, including data entry, reconciliations, and financial reporting, while supporting the overall workflow of our Accounting department. The internship will last 1-2 semesters and is intended for students available for an academic or summer term.

Community Education Group (CEG) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to eliminate disparities in health outcomes and improve public health in disadvantaged populations and under-served communities. CEG accomplishes this by conducting capacity-building and needs assessments, training community health workers, sharing our expertise through national networks and local capacity-building efforts, and advocating for practical and effective health policies that lead to social change. CEG has over 30 years of experience in various sectors relating to health disparities and today is committed to bringing resources, opportunities, and attention to the 13 states of Appalachia. 

Job Location: 

Remote - Preference will be given to those living in or with connections to the rural regions of the 13 states of Appalachia: AL, GA, KY, MD, MS, NY, NC, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WV.

Position Specific Duties/Responsibilities 

Basic understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)  

General knowledge of Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200 

Assist in ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations 

Work closely with the Accounting team to understand accounting processes and procedures 

Responsible for a variety of accounting and bookkeeping tasks 

Provide accounting and clerical support to the accounting department 

Assist with the accurate and timely entry of banking and credit card bank feed transactions into accounting software 

Assist with the accurate and timely entry of vendor invoices into online accounts payable app for synchronization into accounting software  

Perform reconciliations of accounts in a timely manner 

Help identify and resolve discrepancies in financial records 

Maintain organized records of invoices, receipts, and other financial documents 

Other accounting and finance-related tasked as assigned 

Reporting Relationships: 

Intern Coordinator and Accounting Operations Manager  

Internship Requirements/Qualifications 

Currently pursuing or recently completed an undergraduate or graduate level degree in accounting 

Demonstrate technical competency with the Microsoft 365 Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive) and Zoom 

Passionate about CEG’s mission and purpose 

General Skill Requirements:  

Exceptional attention to detail for completion of accurate work  

Excellent self-management, communication, and team-based participation 

Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication, public speaking, and presentation skills 

Exemplary ability to manage multiple tasks using independent judgment and discretion 

Ability to work appropriately and effectively with diverse age groups, racial and ethnic minorities, sexual and gender-identity minorities, and neurodiverse communities 

Ability to work independently in a high-paced, deadline-oriented environment while working remotely

Physical and Sensory Requirements:  

Ability to read, write, and converse in English 

Ability to communicate efficiently with staff, stakeholders, and vendors 

Ability to remain calm and composed under stress 

Prolonged sitting at a desk and working on a computer is necessary to perform the duties of the position 

Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements) 

Ability to evaluate/interpret information and make independent judgments/decisions 

Schedule

Interns will be expected to work most of their time between 9 am – 5 pm EST, Monday through Friday, but exact working hours are flexible. Interns will work no more than 20 hours per week, but the precise number of hours is also negotiable at the time of hire, depending on internship requirements and CEG needs. 

Compensation

Base rate of $18.00+ per hour dependent on professional experience and schooling level.
