General Definition
This position involves technical safety work in identifying, evaluating, and controlling occupational health and safety hazards. Responsibilities include conducting workplace and public facility inspections, using engineering design and industrial hygiene principles, and worker training to minimize potential hazards to City employees and the general public. Significant interaction with departmental managers, supervisors, union representatives, safety administrators, and consultants is required to investigate potential hazards, communicate findings, implement corrective actions, and support centralized safety programs. Work may involve light physical effort and exposure to hazardous materials or agents.

Minimum Requirements:
Training, Education, & Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene or a related physical/biological science from an accredited college or university.
- Experience: Two years of industrial hygiene experience involving the investigation, analysis, and evaluation of workplace conditions, practices, programs, and employee injuries. A master's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental science, or safety science may substitute for the experience requirement if it included at least a three-month full-time co-op or internship performing industrial hygiene work.
Physical & Medical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties in various environmental conditions, requiring light physical effort, ability to wear respiratory protection, and exposure to hazardous materials or agents.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Candidates must submit a copy of their official college transcript(s) indicating completion of the educational requirement and all required licenses, registrations, or certifications at the time of application. Transcripts must indicate the conferment of the appropriate degree.
Equivalency Statement:
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable by the Office of Human Resources, including a bachelor's degree in a related area.
