Assistant Director of Academic Programs

The School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is seeking an Assistant Director of Academic Programs. This PhD level position requires someone with a scientific background in the biological sciences, outstanding communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively. CSHL is a world-renowned research institute with a long history of educational programs. CSHL’s summer Undergraduate Research Program, started in 1959, is the country’s oldest research program for undergraduates. It provides a transformative experience for students intending to enroll in PhD and MD-PhD programs. The PhD graduate program, started in 1999, provides an innovative training experience for students to enter diverse careers in the biosciences. And our newly developed PREP Postbaccalaureate Program prepares its participants for matriculation into rigorous graduate programs. The School manages and oversees these educational programs. As part of the School’s administrative team, the primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director are to coordinate the graduate curriculum, and the summer Undergraduate Research Program.Cold Spring Harbor Lab is hiring an Assistant Director.  As part of the School’s administrative team, the Assistant Director will manage and coordinate the curriculum, and assessment and outcomes reporting of the graduate program. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for the summer Undergraduate Research Program by liaising with CSHL faculty and administrative staff.

Position Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the courses and activities of the graduate curriculum;
  • Lead the student selection process for the summer Undergraduate Research Program, oversee the program;
  • Participate in the School’s recruitment activities;
  • Participate in assessment of the School’s educational programs;
  • Liaise with CSHL faculty and administrative staff
  • Advise undergraduate, postbaccalaureate and graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees on matters related to training programs, fellowship applications, career planning and development, and job searches;
  • Prepare progress reports for funding agencies and the School’s internal advisory committee;
  • Stay up to date with advances in undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION: PhD degree in a STEM field
EXPERIENCE: Administrative experience in higher education
SKILLS: Must be proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel and graphic arts software, such as PowerPoint and Adobe Illustrator. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, high level of independent judgment and sensitivity. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team. Rigorous attention to detail. Positive, forward-thinking, mission-oriented attitude a must. Demonstrated interest in educational outreach preferred.

The salary range for this role is $77,900-$116,900.   The salary range listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity).
