GBH Archives (Metadata and Training Data) Internship - Fall 2024

GBH

GBH enriches people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives.

At GBH, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are hybrid and work both from home and onsite. Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of two days each week, every Tuesday and one other day, to be determined by their business unit. Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The GBH Archives catalogs, tracks, organizes, and preserves the media used to create GBH productions. The GBH Archives holds physical and digital media and paper records, including materials that need to be retained for production, legal, financial, historical, or administrative purposes.

GBH Archives also collaborates with the Library of Congress to coordinate the American Archive of Public Broadcasting, a national effort to preserve and make accessible historically significant public radio and television programming that has aired over the past 70+ years.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

The GBH Archives is offering a part-time paid internship for a student in an accredited undergrad or master’s program. This internship will be primarily remote, with an option for hybrid work. The intern will work with the Metadata Operations Specialist and members of the GBH Archives team, focused on creation of training and evaluation data for machine learning tools to support archival description and cataloging.

About half of the intern’s hours will be spent creating data for training and testing machine learning systems that analyze audiovisual materials.  This will involve classifying scenes from old public broadcasting programs according to an established categorization scheme.  It may also include correcting audio transcripts and evaluating auto-generated captions.  The rest of the intern’s hours will provide broader experience in digital archiving of audiovisual materials, especially cataloging and metadata.  Instruction and mentorship will be provided.  The intern will be encouraged to reflect critically on the relationship between humans and computers in data creation processes.

Applicants must provide a short cover letter explaining their interest in archives and metadata.  If applicable, letters should note interest and experience with libraries, audiovisual materials, databases, data science, and/or machine learning.

Applicants must be willing to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.  Regular working hours will be chosen by the intern and their manager.
