Special Education Teacher

The Ivymount Organization operates two schools: the renowned Ivymount School - a nonpublic Special Education day school for students with autism and related disorders, Kindergarten through age 21; and The Maddux School - a private General Education school with a distinctive social learning curriculum for pre-kindergarten through second grade. Ivymount also brings the success of its schools to the community through therapeutic and recreation programs and services, and professional consultation and products. They’re delivered by Ivymount Endeavors Outreach, Ivymount Community Outreach & Services, and the Ivymount Professional Collaborative.
Summary: Responsible for development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting related to designated content area curricula.
Essential Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in special education and/or designated content area
• Maryland Standard Professional Certificate in Special Education or eligibility for Conditional Certificate. If teacher holds a Conditional Certificate, teacher must complete requirements for a Standard Professional Certificate within the required timeframe.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
• Experience in Special Education or a related field
• Two years’ classroom teaching experience as a lead teacher
• Experience teaching designated content area
• Understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and other related disorders
• Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise classroom staff
• Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational and time management skills
• Cooperative participation within an interdisciplinary team
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Support of program philosophy
• Computer skills related to common office tasks such as email, conducting internet searches, and using MSOffice (e.g., MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint)
Desired Qualifications
• Master’s degree in special education or designated content area
• Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification or enrollment in a BCBA certification program
• Experience with parent/guardian communication
• Experience planning and implementing instructional lessons based on evidence-based practices
• Knowledge of and experience with assistive and instructional technology
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop, implement, and monitor content instruction and related materials to ensure alignment with course requirements, Individualized Education Plans (IEP), and student performance
• Create and implement instructional plans based on evidence-based practice
• Supervise classroom staff’s instructional planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting related to the content area
• Implement classroom/individual behavior management programs
• Participate in the IEP development process as assigned (e.g., administer assessments, write reports, attend meetings)
• Report on student progress as assigned (e.g., quarterly report cards, academic checklists)
• Administer and maintain updated student assessments
• Communicate with parents/guardians related to content area
• Hold confidential all knowledge of students and their families
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities
• Participate in all relevant meetings (e.g., team meetings, parent meetings, IEP meetings)
• Conduct supervision meetings with classroom staff providing instruction in the content area
• Participate in supervision meetings with Program Supervisor/Coordinator/Director
• Attend all program/division/school meetings
• Contribute relevant information for performance reviews of classroom staff providing instruction in the content area
Assist in staff training as assigned
Complete and master all training components within designated training period
• Maintain certification as a Special Education Teacher
• Attend all ongoing training as assigned
• Seek resources necessary for performing responsibilities related to students, parents, or team members
• Other related job duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
