Job Description

Job Title: Transmission Line Engineer/Specialist Job Family

 

Introduction

 

This position will contribute to the Electric Line Engineering team in the design and management of the current plans to modernize our electric transmission and distribution infrastructure.  The incumbent will provide technical expertise to solve complex problems and apply leadership skills to project management, as well as offer quality oversight of work in electric T&D line design.  Incumbents are expected to have advanced engineering skills and to have the ability to work independently. This position will demonstrate sound collaboration with company personnel and peer departments, with timely technical input and economic evaluations; to assure safe, reliable, and technically balanced solutions to deliver power.

Electric Transmission Line Project Engineer/Specialist Job Family

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, estimate, design and manage complex electric transmission line projects according to Company Standards, sound engineering practices and applicable codes.
  • Prepare detailed drawings, permits, easements, material estimates and reservations; along with all other documents required for project completion.
  • Manage projects to completion and provide engineering direction throughout the project life cycle.
  • Work with external engineering contractors to ensure project quality, constructability, as well as conformance to all company standards and applicable codes.
  • Provide technical support for the operations of all Company and customer transmission lines.
  • Research, specify, order and coordinate material purchases and establish stocking levels of major transmission line electrical equipment.
  • Verify Transmission Line Engineering's methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Proficient in developing positive working relationships to effectively collaborate and provide transparency to departmental work activities.
  • Receives input from Operations groups on performance of engineered facilities and electric systems; evaluates and improves the quality of future designs and processes within Engineering.
  • Participates in the restoration of Company transmission lines during storms and other emergencies.
  • Interfaces and works with various interconnected companies, utilities, and entities such as INDOT, REMC, FERC, NERC and Midwest ISO where appropriate.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

This position will be filled as an Engineer I - Senior Engineer, depending on experience level.

Engineer Entry Level / Specialist Entry Level

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.

Knowledge/Experience

  • General engineering knowledge of statics, material strengths, and basic power system operation
  • Basic understanding of NESC codes and their applications
  • Ability to complete cost estimates and order project material under close supervision
  • Ability to apply basic electrical and civil engineering principals and to understand sound Electric Line project solutions
  • Ability to read and interpret GIS and civil infrastructure design drawings for public improvement projects
  • Ability to use established procedures and work under immediate supervision
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCad
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

 

Engineer I / Specialist I

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.

Knowledge/Experience

  • General engineering knowledge of statics, material strengths, and basic power system operation

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.

Knowledge/Experience

  • 2 + years of electric utility experience
  • Increased understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles
  • Increased understanding of basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Increased knowledge of civil engineering principles including: statics/strength of materials, soil properties, concrete, and structural analysis
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of Electric Line Engineering to the completion of difficult assignments; with limited supervision
  • Has increased understanding of NESC codes and their applications
  • Increased knowledge of the NIPSCO system configuration and operation of electric transmission and distribution facilities
  • Increased ability to complete multiple moderately-sized MLOG cost estimates, while working under some supervision
  • Organizational and planning skills to plan workload and logically layout project schedules
  • Increased communication skills for interfacing with company personnel and outside customers and contractors

 

Preferred for Selection:

  • Advanced material and labor estimating and project management skills
  • PMP certification

 

Engineer III / Specialist III

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.

Knowledge/Experience

  • 4 + years of electric utility experience
  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of Transmission Line Engineering to the completion of complex assignments
  • Has a proficient understanding of NESC codes and applications
  • Proficient in various types of overhead and underground line engineering projects, with limited support
  • Significant ability to effectively complete complex multiple projects concurrently on schedule, with minimal supervision
  • Exceptional communication and motivation skills to lead technical personnel and project managers
  • Proficient ability to work with customers or contractors to explain solutions for complex technical issues
  • Proficient ability to assist less experienced subordinates for given projects or tasks
  • Ability to interpret and applies organizational policy and recommends changes in engineering procedures
  • Provides engineering direction on electric standards related initiatives, as well as electric system operation challenges
  • Applies critical thinking to review project design Pros and Cons of all possible solutions

Preferred for Selection:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
  • Advanced material and labor estimating and project management skills
  • PMP certification

 

Senior Engineer

Required for Selection:

Education

  • A graduate from a four year ABET accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) certification.

 

Knowledge/Experience

  • 7 + years of electric utility experience
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles, and engineering computer applications such as AutoCAD, SAG-10, PLS-CADD, and Pole Foreman
  • Ability to read and interpret various types of civil structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering drawings such as electric schematic, electric line plan and profile, and land survey documents
  • An expert in basic practices of researching technical design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.  Must be proficient in the selection and application of proper engineering principles and techniques
  • A comprehensive mastery of NESC codes and their applications
  • Experience working with local, state government, and special district organizations
  • Must have good planning, organizational, verbal and written communications skills.  Ability to perform duties effectively under emergency and contingency situations
  • High level of knowledge in safe, reliable, and compliant electric transmission and power system operations and design
  • Ability to supervise, support, and guide employees and contractors in a technical environment
  • Able to coach and develop employees.  Ability to encourage teamwork and motivate participation
  • Possess strong PC skills for engineering, communications, reports, databases and spreadsheets
  • Comprehensive ability to effectively complete complex multiple projects concurrently, with little or no supervision
  • Has significant experience and ability to work with customers or contractors to solve complex technical issues and present the results
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

Preferred for Selection:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
  • Advanced material and labor estimating and project management skills
  • PMI PMP certification
  • Experience with the design and specification of engineered steel poles and lattice transmission towers
