Archaeological Collections Technician

Length: Term of positions is 52 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Compensation: $18.75/hour, plus $1000 housing allowance (pre-tax, $250.00/week)

Archaeological Collections Technician Resource Assistant

 

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. 

 

Stewards in partnership with the Santa Fe National Forest seeks an Archaeological Collections Technician Resource Assistant. This position will assist in documenting, organizing, and managing archaeological collections under the care of the Forest Service. Duties will include cataloguing and photographing artifacts, ensuring that site information is up to date, entering collections information into Natural Resources Manager (NRM), and working with museums and other repositories to ensure collections information is complete and that curation standards are being met. 

 

This position will require some travel and handling of pre-contact artifacts. Data management for archaeological collections will include analyzing artifacts and entering pertinent information into spreadsheets as well as summarizing collections for inclusion in site records and documentation. Work with museums and repositories will involve gathering information on collections being held, digitizing collections records, and assisting with proper storage of artifacts. 

 

 

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Work with mentor to identify correctly and document pre-contact artifacts, while documenting artifact type, quantity, and condition in spreadsheet
  • Photograph artifacts using a high-resolution camera, ensuring there is a scale.
  • Manage data for Forest Service Collections – entering information into NRM (Natural Resources Manager) and attaching it to existing site records.
  • Digitize collections records through scans and renaming conventions.
  • Assist museums in meeting curation standards, including reboxing artifacts in proper storage containers (acid-free boxes)

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have High School Diploma/GED.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or driver’s license for at least three years).
  • US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Museum Studies
  • Southwest Archaeology experience
  • Previous experience working with collections management.
  • Experience writing technical reports such as Section 106 clearances.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
